I don’t know what is causing it. My monitor or GPU? Basically shadows have weird edges and lines that are quite pronounced when in dark areas. Here are 2 photos taken with a phone of a YouTube video where the problem is clearly seen.(if it’s not visible increase brightness)
Is it in games or just videos? YouTube compresses the shit out of videos, so things don’t always look that great on the site.
Like @w.meri said, banding is common on YouTube because of the heavy compression. If it’s bothering you that much, you could lower the contrast on your monitor.
If it’s also happening elsewhere as well, I’d try a different video cable before anything more drastic.
It’s happening in video games as well.
Is the monitor still under warranty? You could always ask for a monitor exchange from AOC. If it does turn out to be the monitor.
No. The warranty is 2 years and my monitor is 3 years old.
Check the dithering options assuming this is an nvidia thing, make sure it’s enabled and 8 bit depth.
Or was it 6? Can’t remember, but check em anyway
I have Nvidia. Where are the dithering options?
Can’t remember sorry, I just remember those symptoms
Quick Google search said it’s only supported on Linux.
Yeah I ran linux at those times, weird if there’s no option for it on windows since the drivers are the same
Just the setting controls are different, but yeah it’s defo a dithering thing, or in other words color banding.
Can you check your color depth so it’s not accidentally set to something low?
It’s set to high.
Monitor post-processing can cause artifacts like this sometimes. Make sure you have sharpness set to 0 (or sometimes 50%), and turn off any detail-enhancement features (bringing out detail in a gradient, means creating edges). You also might have the brightness set too high. Check yourself at http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/.
It’s probably not the gpu, unless you have so weird post-proc options on in the control panel. Try a different monitor, or taking a screenshot and viewing it on another device (like a phone).
