I am really new to this forum and new to audiophile grade headsets. I'd Like your input on which audiophile grade headsets I can use for gaming ( Something with a good sound stage preferably). I have moved away from "Gaming Headsets" because tehy seem cheap and very overpriced for what you get. I do mostly play FPS games and a mic is not necessary because I can attach a ModMic from AntLion on to the headset itself. My budget is around $250 ish.
For FPS gaming, you're main concern is going to be soundstage, having headphones that provide an accurate sense of direction and distance will give you a significant advantage over opponents with an inferior setup. If you're looking for headphones for gaming exclusively, nothing beats the audio technica AD700x, which sacrifices every trace of warmth for god mode inducing detail. However, If you want headphones that will work well for music and other media, you should consider the Beyerdynamic DT880 pro and DT990 Pro. While the soundstage is in a different league than the AD700s, the DT880 will still blow any gaming headset out of the water, while providing a superior experience for other media. Likewise, the DT990 is a small step down form the DT880 in terms of positional accuracy in exchange for a more fun listening experience. Note that for the DT880 pro and 990 pro, you will need an amp, a fiio E10 should suffice, though you may want to consider upgrading to a O2 + Odac or Schiit stack in the future for the best audio quality.
This thread contains a wealth of information on gaming headphones and headsets should you wish to learn more.
Thank you, I do appreciate your input on this. I was actually looking into the DT880 pro , but they are expensive here in canada ($400 CAD/ $360 USD), but I've found some in the US for only $180. I am in sort a predicament to whether or not I should forget all of this audiophile stuff, even though it may be more beneficial, and go with something like the steelseries 9H headset. Just have not found a good audiphile headset that woks well with gaming is all.
Pretty much any audiophile headphone will beat all but the highest end headsets, if availability or regional pricing is an issue, look for something ubiquitous like Sennheisers or audio technica ATH M50s.
Ah, Yes the ATH M50s. Well I was all sold for the ATH M50s right up until an hour ago. I was going to buy it and add a modmic or a desktop mic, but I had read about the sound staging being horrible and how the M50s really shouldn't be used for gaming at all. Since gaming is one of my highest concerns (Especially FPS), I decided not to go with the M50s. Although, I would still keep my mind open to audiophile headphones with a modmic/ desktop mic if I could find a good pair of headphones.
