Athlon Kaveri and Fx-8370

Just some cool news to look at. I like the 8370 as it probably will have a reasonable tdp.

Just call me the amd news guy;)

Everything my source said was true, " More models" and also more " Apu bullshit " for 2014 late 2015/q1 2016 for something serious, can't find my own thread though!

i dont see the point of launching a FX8370..

They better focus on improving the architecture to compete with intel, nobody cares about higher clockspeeds..

It seems to be just a show. It seems they abandoned the idea of a Steamroller FX CPU a long time ago (let alone Excavator), and they just want to make everyone aware that they haven't given up on big desktop CPUs.

There won't be anything really new from AMD's CPU division at least until 20nm is available, more likely until late 2016 when the new architecture drops. It's sad, really.

some sources i found 4 months ago mentioned no new FX chips for 2 year. all apu and other junk,
for i hope there redoing the whole fx architecture.

til then you will find random articles saying fx. but there will not be a new one,
not like the current fx's chips are weak, just dated compared to some of the new intel offerings,
but not like i really care about intel performance my current 990fx+fx8350 handles,
everything i throw at it. multi client gaming, video rending.

on a side note. im glad there using apu as a test bed for stuff

It's not that they abandoned the idea for an Athlon/FX Steamroller part.  It's that they don't have things worked out yet so that they would have the resources to develop so many CPUs.

It takes a lot of time and money to develop entirely new CPUs, and AMD simply isn't in a position to take risks yet.  For the time being, they need to focus on what makes them money, APUs.

EDIT: That being said, I can imagine that AMD has begun working on a new line up of FX processor on the up coming Excavator architecture.  I would expect a mid-2015 launch.  But hey, that's just my 2-cents.

No, I know AMD commited I talked to my sources ( execs and employees). The new enthusiast FX will release in late 2015 for one source another says early 2016 so around that time frame, keep in mind one is in China. Jim Keller is developing a new architecture and in emails told me they will catch in core performance and they will surpass intel in other aspects. Here is an official confirmation though for the new FX cpus.

8, AMD FX series processors is relatively less active, what planning for the future?

Lienhard: Last year we introduced a Piledriver (hammers) architecture, and achieved good market performance, there are about 30% growth, Kaveri also used Steamroller updates (excavator) architecture. FX Series of high-performance market positioning in the future will, within two years you will definitely see an update.

Athlon X4 860K / 840

Whhoo hoo! Good news -- call them the Pentium Anniversary Killer!

The Pentium anniversary is a joke. Just get the 750k/760k for around the same price and it will beat it any day in overclocks...its a gimmic for fanboys.

Its nice to see amd putting out kaveri athlons, that'll help a bit with the blow the unlocked pentium dealt them. But really, putting out new 8 core piledrivers?! Why not just make 8 core kaveri chips? I guess it'll be neat to see >4ghz chips 8 core for a reasonable price, for some non gaming things like 3d modling it could be cool. The 8310 sounds cool too, 8 cores at 95 watts so lower end motherboards could have an upgrade path from the 6350 if they do it right. Probably only 3.0ghz but if the game(or any software) competently uses all 8 cores it will be better than the 6350 and about on par with the i5.

Honestly the kaveri athlons are the coolest thing in the article, the 8370 is kinda meh but could have a place IF they market it right.  If they price it right the 8310 could be almost as cool as the kaveri athlons, sure for a lot of games(those using 4 or less cores) the althons may beat it even without the l3 cache assuming they are clocked a lot higher. Though for streaming if for some reason you are dead set on using hardware encoding the 8310 could be the go to chip for lower end streaming, though with nvidia and amd's gpus(apus included) and intel's igp being able to record or stream games with little impact on game performance even with fewer cores needing an 8 thread cpu to stream well is a thing of the past. Same with video rendering, 8 threads are better than 4 but modern gpus can render videos for say adobe premier so idk amd really has to market these new 8 core cpus right if they want them to take off. They have a good chance with the 8310 if it can work okay on 'older' 4+2 powerphase boards, still beats a 63x0..

Did they say anything about how they may compare to say the i7's or having pcie 3? I am contemplating a rebuild next year when I get my bachelor's degree and I really want to get a board with pcie 3.

The fastest GPUs currently on the market still can't fully saturate PCIe 2.0 yet, so there's no need to worry about 3.0 (which is simply twice the bandwidth of 2.0).

No it isn't. In gaming, the G3258 OC's like crazy (even on air) and gives the FX-6300 a run. The 750/760k has a hard time competing with the G3258 OC'd in most games. Go read some actual reviews/tests.

AMD still hasn't released the A8-7600 - the best Kaveri part in terms of performance per dollar and performance per watt. I wonder what the delay is...

Regardless, they might as well stretch out their current parts/architectures as much as they can prior to the next big architectural change.

Go read some frametime tests. The Pentium stutters like Skyrim on games that aren't even Skyrim.

Hopefully this thing convinces someone to do a comprehensive CPU frametime comparison.

Yeah, it's certainly not perfect, but for a straight dual-core, it's pretty darn fast and capable in terms of gaming.

I do more than game.

^ +1 Here is hoping for new design soon and a new socket with M.2 and DDR4 support.

Its like that girl you keep asking out. But instead of saying NO she just keeps stringing you along.

What do you do besides gaming that you would need PCIe 3.0?

(really, just curious)
