ASUS X670E build - intermittent boot/10Gbit detection issues

Built a new rig and it’s 100% stable in Windows/Memtest86, but it has some intermittent startup issues.

Specs:

Win 11 Pro
7800X3D
ASUS ProArt X670E Creator WiFi (BIOS v1710)
64GB G.Skill TridentZ 6000 kit (on mobo QVL)
1080Ti
Sound Blaster Z
Onboard AMD (MediaTek) WiFi/BT card swapped for Intel AX210

Problem 1: Onboard 10Gbit Marvell NIC randomly missing from Windows device manager. It’s either there or it’s not. If I boot up and the 10Gb NIC is detected, it works flawlessly until I shut down or reboot. Sometimes it detects after a warm shutdown/restart, sometimes not.

Problem 2: Intermittent halt at Bitlocker recovery key screen. Entering the key allows Windows to start.

Problem 3: Cold boot fails 100% of the time. QLED lights get stuck on white (VGA detection.) This happens with either the dGPU or iGPU.

Any suggestions? Already tried reflashing the BIOS, clearing CMOS, removing cards, etc. BIOS is all default settings except for EXPO enabled and ArmoryCrate/MyASUS disabled.

I have the same issue with my ProArt X570, which to the best of my understanding uses the same AQC113CS chip as your board. In both Windows and Linux. I eventually ended up disabling the onboard 10G NIC in the BIOS; fortunately I had a free slot for an Intel X520. But it definitely hurts to give up one of my precious expansion slots to mitigate a broken board feature.

You could try flashing this if you’re feeling game. Some folks in the Asus forums have reported success with it. I’m trying to do it from a Windows VM and not getting very far.

EDIT: OK, I was able to boot into Windows To Go and run the flash utility from there. Confirmed the firmware version change in Linux via:

Before:

$ journalctl --boot=-2 --grep=ATL2FW
Dec 13 14:08:06 hyperion kernel: atlantic: Detect ATL2FW 103000f

After:

$ journalctl --boot=0 --grep=ATL2FW
Dec 13 16:02:13 hyperion kernel: atlantic: Detect ATL2FW 1030021

0x21 is 33, so 1030021 seems to match the version number of the Dell update (1.3.33).

I’m going to switch over to using it instead of the X520 as my daily driver. I guess I’ll report back if I have another weird drop out?? Fingers crossed!

EDIT 2: Welp, that didn’t take long. :facepalm:

Dec 13 16:16:22 hyperion kernel: atlantic: probe of 0000:3b:00.0 failed with error -5

So I installed the Dell Marvell flash utility and ran it. It pops up a PowerShell window that reads “Getting four part IDs…” for a few seconds and a CMD prompt window that reads “Press any key to continue…”

I don’t think it actually did anything.

It’s still borked on the 1.3.33 firmware anyway so :man_shrugging:

New plan: attach Thunderbolt 10Gbit adapter to USB4 port, disable onboard 10Gbit.
