I’m trying to fix my friend’s laptop (he pinched the EDP cable between the metal chassis and the bottom plate after reassembling from cleaning); if I’m understanding the manual correctly (attached), I’m going to have to take the entire thing apart just to get to the LCD panel to replace the EDP cable???
I already have the replacement cable, I just need a sanity check before I pull my hair out.
Thank you in advance.

I just looked it up and yeah you may need to, purely due to the Microphone board. I can’t really tell where the ribbon cable would be connected to.
I can’t tell what signals the EDP Cable is carrying, and for certain there are lots of pins available within an EDP cable to have a single connector, so it may be using just that one cable. In the case the entire microphone is connected to the actual top panel, you may be able to get away with it by:
- Getting to the Main board view (page 24/25), and then moving to
- Keyboard module (Page 29) where the rest of the hinge and hinge cover are removed.
With all of this being said, I’ve serviced Dell and IBM/Lenovo laptops - this ASUS Service Manual is SO AWFUL. I feel your pain.
Disclaimer: Since this is not your laptop, you need to weight the risks of trying to open this thing up. I am not an expert on Asus laptops!

Thank you. The EDP cable is for the video signal, which routes through the hinge to the back of the LCD.
It’s all good, I just need to set aside the time to do it and track all of the screws (at least I don’t have to remove the cooling solution, as I’ve never worked with liquid metal, lol).
I deeply appreciate you taking a look. Thank you.
That is true! As in, an eDP wire is mostly used for video signals, but the eDP interface itself can be wired in different manners. If you see this wiring diagram from Apple, there are plenty wires that just straight up are unused and could be leveraged for anything else, which means that an eDP connector can have more signals than just eDP. This is what makes me believe that it is possible that the mic board is just straight up connected to a daughterboard in the LCD panel, but I just can’t see it.

Interesting. reads the entire wiki (And THAT gets bookmarked)
I just ordered the exact cable model that was on the tag from an Asus affiliated parts distributor. Asus’ own parts shop was out of stock and would have taken 7-8 weeks, while Impact Computers (US distributor) had it in stock. I ordered Saturday, it got here yesterday (same State).
It is a video problem, though, but not the LCD itself.
The only board that I had to remove to get the main board to come up was the Indicator Board (pg 18.) It’s just going to be time consuming, and that’s fine. Meditation time.
Good stuff! sounds like you got this!
Wait up, so you DID have to remove the main board?

I was trying to see if there were more screws underneath without disconnecting all of the ribbon cables, hence the sanity check. lol
I just need to set aside a full day to do it without rushing.
Again, I sincerely appreciate your input.
Edit: I haven’t worked on a modern laptop before, that being said, I understand compact and the fragility of ribbon cables. It just turned into a time-eater, and that’s all.
