Assigning UIDs above the range defined in login.d

Hello my fellow Linux people,

I'm looking for others insight and experiences with assigning UIDs above the range defined in the login.d file.

how high are we talking?

Somewhere around 60K. I can get a much more precise number tomorrow.

Maybe for now, say starting at 1 over max_uid in the conf file.

Highest you should try setting is 4,294,967,293
(obviously without the commas)

Be warned tho...

A common bug is to incorrectly treat a UID as a signed 32-bit integer which has a range of -2,147,483,648 (-231) to 2,147,483,647 (231-1), so a UID over 2,147,483,647 may expose bugs.
