Asrock romed8-2t... thunderbolt question

a quick question… as i was going from site to site pricing this motherboard… i noticed that there actually two different pictures being used by sellers of this romed8-2t board… looking at the two pictures i attached below… along the bottom of the board… some of the pictures show a 5-pin header and other pictures don’t have the header… but do have 5 metal spots… after looking into this… i’ve seen some assertions that it is a thunderbolt 3 5-pin header… but it was very few people saying this… so just curious… has anyone confirmed this yet? (note… the second pic is from the asrock webiste)

It was apparently on the earliest run of boards, which is how it made its way into pictures; the stock production revision doesn’t have it populated. The last response I saw relayed from someone who asked Support was that it remained a custom-order option and no customers ever ordered it. (“Custom order” as in “customer pays for a large number of such boards up front”.)

I haven’t personally verified any of that, but it tracks with general industry patterns.

Thanks… i should have one in my possession soon… so will see which version i get… also… wonder if i could just soldier the leads from a thunderbolt extension card directly to the board would work… will have to see…

It’s not just a header; support components are required (see the chip near it in the picture), and Thunderbolt functionality requires active BIOS support for I/O reconfiguration.

This article series may be interesting if you want to go down that rabbit hole.

I haven’t seen the connector in any reviews, and my board purchased in May 2021 doesn’t have the connector:
