ASRock 970 EXTREME4

So I was looking at this ASRock 970 Extreme4. I want to put the FX-8350 and Sapphire HD7870 on it.
Is it an ok pick for these two?
What RAM should I choose for this conf.?

Asrock 970 extreme 4 with 4+1 powerphase and analog vrm´s not realy  a good board to go with an FX8350.

It's a terrible board, i have it and you can really feel the low build quality and you will not be overclock all to well. i would spend an extra $30 and get the ASUS M5A99X Evo. It's a great board with good parts and build quality that will show.

For RAM, I would get an 8GB(2x4GB sticks) of 1600MHz or 1866MHz at CL9.

i also have this board and it handles my over clocked 6300 no problems, although i would agree for an 8350 the asus is much better

+1 to comments above.  You'll definitely want to pair the 8350 with a board that uses the 990FX chipset.  These boards typically have better power delivery than boards with the 970 chipset.

Thanks a lot, I almost made a terrible mistake
Do you have any board recommendation?

The board that you recommend looks really good, thanks.

For RAM, I was also looking at the 8GB(2 x 4GB) I'm kind of lost in the sea of RAM sticks in the store. Do you have any recommendations for the exact manufacturer and model that I can use?

Note: I'm trying to get the 8GB now, and another 8 GB later when I save up some more money

Thanks

  1. Asus crosshair V formula Z. 8+2 powerphase digi vrm, supreme FX sound
  2. Asus 990FX Sabertooth R2.0. 8+2 powerphase digi vrm.
  3. Asrock 990FX extreme9. 12+2 powerphase digi vrm
  4. Asrock 990FX Fatality pro. 12+2 powerphase digi vrm
  5. Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0. 6+2 powerphase digi vrm
  6. Asus M5A99X evo R2.0 6+2 powerphase digi vrm (only 20 pci-e lanes)

Here you have a list of boards, which are decent enough to handle a FX8350.

Here's two more to consider...

Depending on your budget, I would go with the Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0

Thanks a lot, but I need the RAID support and the Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0 doesn't have it unlike its brother EVO

But then again the EVO doesn't have the AMD 99FX like the PRO does.

It's going to be a tough call

Holy... that is a lot of them

What are their pro's and con's? I would like the Sabertooth but it costs me a hell of a lot just like the extreme9. V formula Z is way out of my league. So it's a tough call between Asus M5A99FX pro and 99X evo. What would you choose?

Note: I would like to use an HDD and the SSD at once but it is not necessary if I'm about to pay more than 150$-170$. Does that cut the M5A99FX pro out?

What do you mean use the HDD and SSD at once? If you are thinking about RAIDing a HDD and a SSD, then don't even think about it, lol. This isn't what RAID is for. IIRC, RAID can only be used with two of the same drives. So that would mean two 500 GB WD Caviar Blue drives could be put into RAID 0, but not a SSD and a HDD. Likewise, two 240 GB Kingston HyperX 3K SSDs could be put into RAID 0. There are also other types of RAID, but I won't get into that.

If you plan on doing RAID in the future, then you may consider getting a RAID controller. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe these can be used with the Asus M5A99FX Pro. I think the particular RAID support that these websites are referring to deals with software RAID.

If you don't want to deal with that, then just grab the Evo version. It'll work just as well as the Pro version.

To clarify, the 990X and 990FX chipsets are pretty much the same. There are some small differences, but you won't notice them. Also, you will be able to use your HDD and SSD with either of these motherboards. You simply connect both of them to the motherboard's SATA III ports using SATA III cables.

Well The Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0 offcourse does have raid support. the evo and the pro are the same boards. only diffrence as i said before is the amount of pci-e 2.0 lanes availeble.

it supports raid 0,1,5 and raid 0+1 configurations ☺

That's odd. This isn't listed on Newegg's website and PCPartPicker says that it doesn't support RAID.

@OP In that case, I recommend the Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0 over the evo.

So, RAID is something like SLI but for storage, thanks for clarifying all of that.

So Asus M5A99FX pro R2.0 it is. THANK YOU! A lot.

scrol to chapter raid configurations.

Even crap $40 mobos support raid dont know where you are geting the mobo dosent have it?

On the pcpartpicker.com the 99FX Pro specified that it doesn't support RAID

Newegg doesn't know their arse hole from their elbow and pcpartpicker copy n paste shit from online.

Read the manual never take there word on anything (manual http://bit.ly/IkWxrt )
