Arma 3 is now downloadable and playable on Linux, but be warned it's early days for the port, and the port may not graduate to official status.
We don't have a key for the game, and I can't justify the expense on it
to test it right now. I have shot off a message to my VP rep, but sadly
he's on vacation. We are at the mercy of either the Arma
developers, or if any of you have a spare key I would gladly accept to
test and stream it tonight.Edit: Screw it, ordered it.
Early reports are encouraging though, with one user noting they are getting a solid 60FPS at 1440p resolution on a 970.
Find Arma 3 on Steam,
but only buy it if you're prepare to lose access to it on Linux if it
doesn't get promoted to stable in future. I hope it works out for both
VP and the Arma developers, as it would be a great game to have
officially on Linux.
The Linux and Mac ports were outsourced to Virtual Programming. The same company that ported games like Bioshock Infinite, Spec Ops the Line, Dirt Showdown, and The Witcher 2 to Linux.
I'm sure it will get to stable on steam for linux. if it runs 60+ fps at 1440P on a 970 (same card as what I have), than great. more dayz and arma III for me, I honestly cbf rebooting into windows/telemetryOS to play games. most of the games I play run on linux (except ASU, GTA V, Dirt Rally (hopefully also soon on linux), grid autosport (being released Fall 2015 to linux on steam), Witcher 3, and a few others).
I'm pretty impressed with the progress dev's have made with linux game availability, now 1/3 of my steam games are available on linux.
The current Limitations form here: http://dev.arma3.com/ports
- Restricted update cycle - the beta ports launch at version 1.42, and we are not yet sure when they will be updated, if ever.
- Limited multiplayer compatibility - the ports technically support mulitplayer connections with the Windows version. However, the server and clients need to be the same version. We offer special legacyPorts branches on Steam for Windows to downgrade to the compatible version (access code: Arma3LegacyPorts for Arma 3 and Arma 3 Server).
- No BattlEye anti-cheat - this service is not available on the port platforms.
- No Launcher - the game's own launcher is not available.
- No Advanced Flight Model - helicopter simulation via RotorLib is not available.
- No Steam branches - it may be possible to select different branches, such as Dev-Branch, but they will not download data or be compatible.
- Limited User-Generated Content compatibility - custom scenarios and mods technically can work in the ports, but it is likely their authors will pursue compatibility with the primary Windows version instead.
- Non-native - the ports use a specialized wrapper developed by our partners Virtual Programming. This approach may impact performance to some degree (approximately 5% - 10%).
Lets hope this gets some momentum!
the port uses the eON wrapper from VP. The same wrapper used in Bioshock Infinite. Makes you wonder what would have happened if VP did the Metro port.
Minimum CPU: FX-8350 uhhhhh that stings. But hey: Arma was never very well optimised.
they say that but, I know they dont enforce it and from reading the forums, there have been at least 2 cases where someone used an Phenom II X4 955BE.
VP did good with Bioshock? I had no issue with last light when i was playing it, was i just lucky?
bioshock infinite runs really really well under linux
This is absolutely great news, I will be testing it out tonight. The only reason I have a windows boot on my desktop is because I play a shit ton of Arma. If you get better fps on multiplayer too... I'll be shitting cinnamon and crying tears of joy for months.
