Are you ready for a driver-less car?

An article on TweakTown said that about 1/4 (27%) of drivers are okay with restrictions placed on cars. I’m curious to hear what this audience thinks of autonomous cars. We tend to be very accepting to new technology, as oppose to average folk. Personally I think it’s great, less time wasted commuting, safer, no drunk drivers.

Poll to keep it organized-

Are you in favor of them? Do you hate the idea? What are your thoughts?

I'm 100% ready for driverless cars

I see may things, some good some others will look down on me for.

For one the earth is going to run out of space for humans and as we are living longer and have less disease killing us off that just makes this process faster. look at cali they are struggling with water. They talk big about desalinization but what happens to the salt? put it back in the ocean? ok ya lets just unbalance the salinity of the ocean cause that's a great idea.

if people are no longer dying in a car wreck we are just preventing nature from removing the "weakest". Please take what I say with a large grain of salt as it is not always the "weaker" person the passes in a wreck.

They are many times humans are going the be the death of us all. It wont be a self driving car or some guy shooting random people or a bomb being dropped. It will be the over population of a planet that people will begin to starve and die of dehydration. That is the real problem people need to worry about.

Okay so the on topic thought now. I think it is a cool idea and will defiantly have benefits but at the same time is it going to get the point where they pass laws that say people can no longer drive because we are to stupid just like they did with seat belts?

Why are we protecting the people who shouldn't be protected? All this hand holding that is going on is really making the next generations complete idiots. People have no clue how to think about things now. Imagination ha what's that. I'd better stop this rant before I piss off everyone on the form.

if there's millions of cars and personality + navigation can cause an error, i think on busy roads it would help reduce accidents in the future.

I hate the idea. Then again, I hate the directions the auto industry has been going for years.

  • Aluminium bodies will, in my opinion, kill you in a crash. Don't show me government tests- I don't trust those, and have my reasons.
  • Automatic transmissions bother me as a driver. I don't want to drive an auto ever again. This one is of course personal preference.
  • I don't like keyless entry systems of any kind from a security perspective.

Considering all of that, driverless cars are, to me, just an extension of the incorrect direction that we've been going along.

If this is incorrect what is your idea of correct?

Indeed it is. A lock is merely a discouraging device.

A keyless entry system, on the other hand, is easy to by-pass with mass-produced, cheap, reliable, and no skill required devices that more or less act as range extenders. You can find them on the 'net for under $50. (No link given because these are criminal intent devices).

You stated in your previous post that you dislike key-less entry from a security perspective. How exactly is a keyed entry (your 1990 Jeep Cherokee) more secure than key-less? Or are you just stating it from a generic standpoint? Because personally I think key-less entry is much more secure than a literal key. Sure one could argue that your car could be "hacked" but it would require a rather sophisticated piece of technology to intrude. And would need someone of particular skills to do so. But people have been picking locks for years, it's something you could learn in a few hours.

Ok, that was weird, not sure how it happened, but my reply became an edit to my "My 1990 Jeep Cherokee" post. (likely PEBCAK)

Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ! I SEE THE LIGHT!

Yes I would be all up for driverless cars, I could get where I need to go at any time which is handy considering I live in the middle of no where. And I could get around with speed and efficiency. And all the other safety usuals like no drunks. Yes do it and do it soon.

Further, it's my stout belief that drunk driving is simply an aspect of modern social Darwinism. We have too few of these.

I would agree with you here, except that the drunk drivers can kill other people, not just themselves.

Driveless cars sound awesome to me. Less accident prone than the stupid people who are driving around. If every car was driven by a "robot" (ie program), then there would doubtlessly be a lot less accidents. That doesn't mean that people should be taken out of the equation though. In case something malfunctions, or an emergency, people should still be willing and able to take the wheel, at least until things advance beyond the foreseeable future. People like to demonize things that they don't understand, and science and technology are DEFINITELY things that they don't understand, so they will be looking for reasons to keep them off the road and protest them and whatnot. Then of course there is all of the politics which tends to just muck things up, especially for the tech and science community, so that will be interesting to see. I hope that things keep going forward. I am all for advancement of technology and science even if that means that we aren't able to actually do anything with it because of the fear mongering and red tape and whatnot.

PC's and gaming are only a minor secondary hobby for me when the weather is no good. My main hobby is cars. If they made everything driverless it would be like losing my closest friend or family member.

I think the driverless cars would have to have the technology to deal with accidents/ emergencies before we could force them upon people. But this would only happen in a perfect world.

I think people like you are the ones that will be the hardest to sell on the idea. Car enthusiasts have proven to only like "old/ classic" stuff. Creating something new with this dramatic of a change will scare off many people.

I would imagine what Will happen in the future if we eventually do get completely driverless, is that race tracks would open up more and new ones would appear for people who actually want to drive manual cars. Parks with different terrains for 4x4s and other things. Iceland already largely does this, well not the race tracks but the off road stuff. I think that is where it would go. Manual cars would be brought to places to drive how you wanted.

Every system fails eventually.

Thank Jesus. Deaf people can now own a car, and better yet won't have to worry about installing drivers. Even cars made the switch to Linux.

I just have a vision of a huge Hyperloop network that has pods large enough to fit an entire car or truck in. Then I could hop in my car, drive into the hyperloop pod and then go anywhere I want at over 700 mph.

I think it will be another 50-100 years before we have any sort of regulations where cars have to be driverless. We will just see assisted braking and steering as well as any other current assists be a requirement in new vehicles by law. These systems alone have the potential to cut down on accidents by at least 50%.
