Have decided to get a copy of 8.1 for my next system build (which I should be able to build before Christmas)
This system will be used for studying! Next system (that I plan on building next year) will be running Windows 10
Question I have: Are there any users out there who are happy with 8.1 and will see it through until January 2023? Just curious.
In 2080 there will be a corporate workstation somewhere running Windows 8.
i will definitely not jump to windows 10.
I´m currently still rocking on Windows 7, and till the time the support for Windows 7 stops,
i might jump on 8.1, if that still gets its updates.
If not, then there will me most likely no windows for me anymore after 7
The way I see it, if I run windows, I might a s well run the latest thing or not run it at all. Why would I run 8.1? Hardware support? I have stuff that is a couple of years old, all is fully supported on 8.1 and also on 10.
Windows 7 is getting kind of old and archaic. Mainstream support for Windows 7 has ended, there is only extended support. That means no updates, only critical security fixes. Microsoft sometimes choose what they see as a critical security problem a bit funny, say that remote exploit for 2003 that they just didn't fix.
Probably only a matter of time before Nvidia and AMD stops doing proper driver updates for Win7, and not sure if win8.1 will be far behind. Win8.1 has a newer WDDM compared to win7 but Win10 has an even newer WDDM. Not to mention Dx12 (that update comes to Xbox in a couple of months BTW, so no old console to even keep win8.1 relevant). The differences between the new WDDM's are the biggest in a long time, WDDM version 2.0 in Win10 brings a lot of interesting stuff to the table. Sure there is a possibility, however very unlikely, that Ms might release Dx12 for 8.1. But that means most of the hardware support won't be there. It needs a full WDDM backport. And it's very unlikely that MS will backport WDDM 2.0 to older OS like win 8.1. They have already tried backporting the WDDM in win8 to win7, that didn't work out for them, not much support for the new hardware functions in Dx11.1 on win7. Sure you have Dx11.1 in name on Win7, but much of the API is just plain disabled. With the free upgrade to Win10 a backport of Dx12 looks even more unlikely.
ill probably stick with windows 8 for the life of this computer. I will probably do a new build in the last quarter of 2016 or first half of 2017 around a zen cpu if they aren't a failure and that ill put windows 10 on.
So you have just under 4 1/2 years. January 14th 2020 is when extended support ends @MisteryAngel
I [would] have been tempted to go with Win7, but 4 years (to me) isn't quite long enough. I'm still interested in Linux and may install a vresion on this laptop I am using which currently has 8.1 on it. The next system build (which will be running Windows 10) will be a gaming system. As stated in my first post, the system I'll be building before Christmas (just need to get the memory, bootdrive, monitor & keyboard) will be a low end A4 4000 based pc that will be used primarily for study (with the Open University)
I'll probably stick with it for a few more years. Only switched to it about six months ago so I'm slow to change my OS
I think i will stay with 8.1 for a long time. Until i need DirectX12 or want the nice dark mode. Or just go switch fully to linux.
It took me forever to jump from Windows 7 to 8.1... So it will also take me a while before I switch to Windows 10. If at all.
I currently use 8.1 and will jump to 10 when Nvidia sorts out their win10 drivers. Unlike everyone else on this forum as of late, windows still gets the job done for me and is still fast and efficient.
At this point.... I'm looking at "upgrading" to 8.1 probably late August... I may decide to upgrade again to 10 at some point... Possibly...
For me it's FAR more likely I'll stick with 8.1 till a few more games start running natively in Linux... Then I'll hop that train for my gaming as well...
Im curious who has windows not been doing the job for?
I only use windows for games that I cannot play on Linux. I am in win7 until now and will remain in it until the win10 drivers get sorted out and enough ways to turn off telemetry on win10 are identified. I skipped 8 completely since I think it is abysmal in design even with my very limited use. If games stop being a factor in 3-4 years or so I do not think I will be using win ever again unless on a VM.
I will be keeping iwndows 8.1 until I get a guarentee that my Sony Vegas and After Effects will run on it. Until Im sure no issues will come up to kill it I wont be switchign on my desktop, laptop... maybe. Dont use it much so why not but then again why bother?
Agreed, I'm going to do the same thing, the factor no one is considering is Linux, Wine, Play On Linux, and any other compatibility software for Linux that might arrive on the scene in the next few years, with the continual advancements of the Linux kernel native Windows may become a moot point.
Just look at the advancements in Linux in the last 4 years and the ever growing list of compatible software that will run on Wine now that couldn't just a couple years ago, we won't even mention a KVM.
yes that will most likely going to be my way aswell.
Linux as the daily driver, and Windows kvm, for gaming.
I'm considering crossover.... But I needs mah mods :(. KVM it is
Still on windows 7 (atlest antill windows 10 gets a service pack....you know its going to get one)
I just don't see the point of Windows 10. DirectX 12 looks nice and all, but it's not worth the auto updates in Windows 10 for all my stuff to break every few days. Once the auto update crap is taken off, then I -may- consider getting it. Until then, I retain my 'Fuck Microshite' status and regretfully use their products every day.
I am still on Windows 7 currently. Would love to try out Windows 8.1, but I have no time for it.
