Do you really need the power of 2 or 3 very powerful gpu's like titans. Isn't it better to just run a Titan and something like 290x as you can play games that support mantle and PhsX. What are you thoughts
Currently you need SLI to do 4K gaming at maximum settings.
But is 4 way sli needed.
It has its uses, when doing something insane like 4K surround (multiple monitors), then it comes into play. A while back, somebody had AMD engineer tailor special drivers for eyefinity to work with it.
Or, you could simply show off with your graphical computing power benchmark score :)
Yep, if you want 100+ FPS on the "next-gen" games at maximum settings, 4-way SLI or CrossfireX is probably required. Also, scientific computations sometimes require multi-GPU setups to be completed in a time efficient manner. Simulations especially use a lot of resources.

4 way crossfire/sli in gaming is not worth it. Games usually only code for 2 graphics cards, although some very big name games do code for 3. In some games 3-4 way crossfire/sli actually decreases fps because the game is not meant to use that many graphics cards. 2 way crossfire/sli is the max I'd recommend with how scarce 3 way optimized games are. In scientific or rendering applications the story is different. Those applications code for as many graphics cards as possible. There are render farms that use quad Gtx 690's, and it actually works for rendering. In gaming its not even possible to hook up more than 2 690's because they already have 2 gpu cores per Gtx 690. 2 Gtx 690's then have 2 gpu cores per card so 2 cards has the max 4 gpu cores in sli. But in a rendering rig they can be set up to use 8 gpu cores (or possibly more) so quad Gtx 690's gets the 8 cores. This is actually efficient in rendering programs but just half the gpu cores at 4, are not efficient in gaming.
In my experience, no crossfire is not worth it at all. I had a 270x so I bought another one with high hopes for crossfire. Out my ~50 steam games and 5 origin games, maybe a total of 4 of them benefited from having a 2nd card. It was terrible. There were a lot of games I actually had to disable crossfire for just to maintain a decent frame-rate. I removed my 2nd 270x and sold it because I was so disappointed with crossfire. That was on 14.1 drivers too.
I would like to congratulate the persons behind this wonderful blog. You've done a good job.

Not all games will scale well with multiple GPUs. Right now, it's just for luxury and bragging rights.

2 high end GPUs is your best bet!
