Are any of the off brand SSDs like kingspec or silicon power reliable? Speeds don't really matter I was just looking for some cheap SSDs to put in laptops I use to mess around with different Linux distros.
Tek Syndicate praises Mushkin like it's the second coming of Jesus and they're coming out with a new ssd tomorrow which i'm planning to buy. Price/performance is unbeatable

That looks awesome but I was really looking more for sub $30 price range since I won't need much storage space at all. This is the kind of SSDs I was thinking of with my question
I've never really heard of Kingspec, Silicon Power supposedly has some good stuff though. Also anything that is sub 120gb is really old...
Here's a $40 ssd from Silicon Power

Cheaper SSDs will have lower grade flash, which is more likely to die. If you get one, I recommend keeping important files away from it.
Always wanted to grab one of those and just open it up, probably some low performance samsung or sandisk chips that weren't to spec. Sorta like the Korean monitors, but waaaaay more sketchy.
Crucial are one of the cheapest brands over here in the UK, yet I find them to be amongst the more reliable SSD's. I prefer them over Samsung EVO's (I have both).
I'm running several Crucial SSDs myself and have yet to have an issue with any of them. Kingston on the other hand is terrible and I will never buy another of their products ever again.
Crucial are one of Micron's consumer brands, so they use decent chips. Far from off-brand.
I bought a cheap SSD once and it didn't preform so well, it was actually a Crucial 64GB V4 SSD (CT064V4SSD2 to be exact) and it pretty much died within a year and the performance was so horrible that my 1 Terebyte WD Blue was faster as a system drive. It would literally take 15 minutes to install an update on Ubuntu that should have took less than 2 minutes on my hard drive. The morale of this story, cheap is cheap if is a named brand or not and it all depends whether you want to take that risk.
mushkin and crucial are far from off-brands... cough up an extra $20 and get a decent SSD.... preferably with MLC and a decent controller... they'll last upwards of 15 years and it's worth it
There's your problem.
I am aware of that now but at the time I thought it was a good deal getting an SSD for £35 as all the other SSDs on the market were really expensive and I wanted to improve the performance of my ageing Q8300 system.
