I own two identical model Seagate Barracuda HDDs. However one is 2TB, and the other is 3TB. The 3TB HDD seems to be significantly louder than the 2TB one. Has anyone else had this issue? Or, do you think it may just be that particular HDD?
More platters=more noise and a higher potential for failure.
Nothing to report.
My older 160gb laptop drive is fairly noisy compared to my 3TB drives.
Sure larger capacities have more platters and R/W heads (moving parts) but the technology that goes into them is relatively quiet
Yes, I own an old Seagate Barracuda 500GB HDD that makes a bloody racket. I am more referring to newer (large capacity) comparable drives though. Comparing something from ten years ago is a bit unfair.
It is true that larger ones can be more noisy simply because of more parts.
That being said, the only time I ever hear my HDDs is when they initialize (i.e. accessing a small secondary used just for music), I never hear them during constant use. Of course, all my storage is on the underside of my case in a special, closed off portion (awesome case design) and on top of that I have 7 case fans and a water pump. They're quiet, but still audible.
I have a Western Digital Black and they are know to be loud, and it is. It's not bad but you can hear it.
