Being a hardcore counter-Strike player all my semi-Pro Swedish friends Who are crazy for counter strike tell me its a sin to play on 60 hertz monitors, I am in the market for a 120 or 144Hz monitor and i wanted to know, is the difference considerable and does it really make things that much more comfortable. Keep in mind i am able to get well above 60 120 or 144 Frames a second. By the way tell me if this is an okay choice for the money: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/801066800-USE/asus_vg248qe_24_led_backlit.html
I wouldn't call it a sin to play on 60Hz. I game on a 120Hz screen. It is noticeable, and everything feels smoother in CS and BF. But friends of mine who aren't hardcore FPS gamers prefer the 1440p IPS screens, and in any game but FPS I would agree with them.
Isn't it still the case that anything past 60Hz is just simulated frames by blinking the backlight? I've seen plenty of high Hz screens in the stores, and the high Hz rate just makes the picture look weird with the in focus objects somehow seemingly disconnected from the rest of the scene.
I don't think the backlight is the problem, more like the refresh rate is so high your eyes see too many clear pictures with no motion blur whatsoever, and that's what makes it feel weird.
I don't know what to say about the soap opera effect, I think that's just something to do with interlacing frames. Ask a physicist :P.
And even if you take your gaming seriously, a moderately priced 60hz IPS pannel is a better investment than a more expensive, less prettier 120/144hz TN monitor.
120hz is great for any game genre. If you put a 60hz next to a 120hz you can see a massive difference. Of course on FPS games it will be most noticable, but in any game it will make it look better. By being able to keep vsync on with a higher refresh you do not have tearing, while maintaining the smooth picture quality of higher framerates. As a gamer who has played multiple games on both, I will never go back to a 60hz screen.
If you can afford the price, I would suggest this monitor. Has 120hz refresh, as well as a 1ms response time GTG.
When you are looking for a great gaming monitor, you want to take into consideration the response time as well. 2ms and lower is a must for any avid shooter fan. For other genres anything 5ms and lower will be fine.
I would also say you could go for the 24 inch version of the benq monitor to drop the price down.
Only on TVs, that's why you have the "800Hz" TVs.
The Duallink DVI LCD screens at 144Hz can actually show 1 unique frame per screen cycle, as long as your PC is powerful enough to output 144 FPS.
You can't have "too high refresh rate". Our eyes or brain simply doesn't work in frames per second.
The soap opera effects comes from when you are used to seeing things at a low FPS (24 for film). Things working at a higher FPS feels speed up. It also works sort of in reverse, if you are used to seeing things at a high refresh rate, you certainly notice when drops.
As for 120 v 60 for gaming I say for most people it is unnecessary. It does give a little advantage for twitch shooters. But only if you are at that level.
Sort of like giving Usain Bolt a pair of cheep Walmart sneakers. I'm sure he will still beat me in a 100m race. But maybe not set a world record.
My acc jumped massively in quake live after going 120hz over 60hz. In fast moving FPS, where aim is paramount, it really is a sin to play at 60hz. Everything is smoother, updated quicker on screen and I can almost guarantee your accuracy will improve.
do it. do it now. upgrade. do not look back.
If you want to play at a competitive level in Counter-Strike, Battlefield or and other fps for that matter then a 120/144hz monitor is a must. I got a Benq 144hz and instantly noticed the difference in Csgo the low input lag made my movement feel sooo much better and it feels like the bullet registration is better too.
I wouldn't listen to people that argue IPS over High Refresh Rate because honestly I have a 1440p IPS panel and i would never play games on it again the difference in colour is noticeable when comparing side by side, but still the colour on my Benq is not bland by any means it looks great for a TN panel.
Just go with either a Benq or Asus 144hz monitor, whichever brand is cheaper in your region and don't worry you won't be disappointed.
That asus is pretty much the standard for 144hz, and is usually the cheapest, though I'd keep an IPS around for other games.
there is also a version with a less fancy stand that drops the price some more. the XL2411T
if you want to go extremely hardcore on the reaction times, you can also use lightboost.
it basically removes any motionblur by strobing black between every frame, but at a cost. the screen will be darker (hance the name "lightboost" :D jk it actually makes the sceen brighter if you use 3d vision) and also the colors will be a bit off (redish).
but playing at 120fps is already giving you very low motionblur/reaction time.
