Archlinux problems

Hi everyone, after using many many distro's i finnaly found the distro to use for my main pc. it's gonna be archlinux with awesome. i have it set up right now in virtualbox (installed in ram :P) (atm, i have it also on my main rig). it's extremely fast and it works really good. but i got some problems

[solved]- can't istall dropbox, sudo pacuar -S dropboxd doesn't work for me. i know i can acces the aur. dropbox-experimential also doesn't work.

[solved]- does someone have a nice awesome setup? the stock settings are pretty bad imo. i want my hands on the keyboard so i don't want to use ecscape and superkey etc.

[solved]- i got archey, but i want it everytime i start a terminal. it's something with systemctl but i can't figure it out

[solved]- xterm works good, but it looks horrible. i want it to look something like this but i'm just starting with editing .cfg files for looks. i normally use applications for that i don't want that anymore. http://youtu.be/qq2agqPoLes?t=1m40s

[solved]- conky! i want conky but it's hard to setup. can't find a good page how to set it up. does someone know a good link? EDIT: maybe not conky, but something like conky. something that runs in terminal like archey. i have archey but it doesn't update and it doesn't show cpu load.

[kind of solved]- how to completly remove packages? i installed the wron packages, $ sudo pacman -S mesa xf86-video-vesa. to remove it, i did $sudo pacman -R xf86-video-vesa. i installed $ pacman -S xf86-video-ati . but i don't know if there are still config files or other files in my system. how to check that? i installed the opensource drivers because i wanted to see how they were. i need to game this system so i will probably install the catalyst drivers but $ sudo pacman -S catalyst doesn't work. which repo do i need for that?

[solved]- i installed some packages with pacman and i removed them with pacman -R. but when i cd into /home/(my name)/.config there are some config files. i installed thunar and i removed it. but there is still a thunar config file. there is even a xfce4 config file but i never installed xfce4. there is a chromium file which is correct because i use chromium right now. and there is a pulse file which i don't know what it is.

[solved]- no icons? when i open thunar i don't have icons. i had it on the virtualbox version with the mesa drivers but with the ati opensource drivers i don't have icons. is that a problem?

[solved]- how to open files with a space in terminal. i made a file called random doc.txt . i cd in to the map and i try to open with gedit random doc.txt but then it opens 2 doc, 1 random and one called doc.txt. how can i delete the file ??

-[don't care anymore XD] how to add stuff in the right corner. i want to see if i'm connected with lan or wifi, cpu load, ram usage, swap usage etc.

- how to install packages in /usr or /partition i made. i need the browser on my ssd (/home is on hdd). awesome is installed with pacman and that's installed somewhere in root. i read the arch but still confused. i can't find the line which says were pacman installs packages. i also need to change this for pacaur or is that the same? is pacaur short for pacman aur??

- i allready crashed arch 10 times in an hour orso :). when i launch steam and I add a game folder on a partition ( i allready made a empty folder on the partition) awesome shuts down and i receive an fatal io error :(.

- pacaur -Ss catalyst gives me catalyst-version but when i type pacaur catalyst it doesn't work. why? do i need to get the git and make the package myself? and there are a lot of extras, which ones do i need for a stable game system (r9 290) or do i need to install some if i have problems?

- how hard is it to write a program yourself? i need to change the gpu fanspeed coreclock voltage etc. is it possible to see the cpu load and temperature of a different pc in the same netwerk?

- what are your favorite apps and what do you do after a fresh install?

- i'm probably gonna add some questions later :P

i need help! list keeps growing XD

For the AUR download the tarball from it's page, Then "tar -xzf package" cd into the created folder and "makepkg -s" then the package will be created and then "pacman -U package"

Use screenfetch instead of archey "pacman -S screenfetch"

Look at Urxvt for a terminal if you want to edit configs to customize it. Otherwise something like lxterminal would work fine.

It does leave some files behind, delete them if you are sure you don't need them. Some programs you have might be default XFCE programs so that's probably why you see xfce stuff.

You have to install an icon pack. Just look them up, there are tuns. Download them and extract them to a folder in ~/.icons. Then use a program like lxappearance to apply it.

File or folders with spaces put single quotes around them such as "cd 'files and folders'". Not sure what else you're talking about. I know gedit makes a backup file whenever you save so that is probably what you're seeing.

Okay, I'll answer what I can.

- can't istall dropbox, sudo pacuar -S dropboxd doesn't work for me. i know i can acces the aur. dropbox-experimential also doesn't work

Did you install the AUR? "pacman -S yaourt"? If so, you have to use "Yaourt -S dropboxd"

Yaourt will install from the AUR, not Pacman.

- does someone have a nice awesome setup? the stock settings are pretty bad imo. i want my hands on the keyboard so i don't want to use ecscape and superkey etc.

What? you want your hands on a keyboard, so why dont you want to use keys? Thats what a tilingWM is for. You HAVE to use a shortcut key for things. Try out BSPWM. It is far superior to Awesome.

- i got archey, but i want it everytime i start a terminal. it's something with systemctl but i can't figure it out

Nope. Open up your .bashrc file and add "archey" to the last line. Save it, and it will show up every time.

- xterm works good, but it looks horrible. i want it to look something like this but i'm just starting with editing .cfg files for looks. i normally use applications for that i don't want that anymore.  http://youtu.be/qq2agqPoLes?t=1m40s

Don't use xTerm. Download a different terminal. I typically use xfce4-terminal. "pacman -S xfce4-terminal"

- conky! i want conky but it's hard to setup. can't find a good page how to set it up. does someone know a good link?

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/conky

- how to completly remove packages? i installed the wron packages, $ sudo pacman -S mesa xf86-video-vesa. to remove it, i did $sudo pacman -R xf86-video-vesa. i installed $ pacman -S xf86-video-ati . but i don't know if there are still config files or other files in my system. how to check that? i installed the opensource drivers because i wanted to see how they were. i need to game this system so i will probably install the catalyst drivers but $ sudo pacman -S catalyst doesn't work. which repo do i need for that?

- i installed some packages with pacman and i removed them with pacman -R. but when i cd into /home/(my name)/.config there are some config files. i installed thunar and i removed it. but there is still a thunar config file. there is even a xfce4 config file but i never installed xfce4. there is a chromium file which is correct because i use chromium right now. and there is a pulse file which i don't know what it is.

I don't know what your question is. Config files are very small, just keep them and dont worry about it. Some packages need configs for other packages.

- no icons? when i open thunar i don't have icons. i had it on the virtualbox version with the mesa drivers but with the ati opensource drivers i don't have icons. is that a problem?

What shows up? Text? Lables? No icons at all? You didn't install an Icon theme. try downloading "lxappearance" and choosing a theme.

- how to open files with a space in terminal. i made a file called random doc.txt . i cd in to the map and i try to open with gedit random doc.txt but then it opens 2 doc, 1 random and one called doc.txt. how can i delete the file ??

Use quotation marks. gedit 'random doc.txt' also, you told gedit to open two files with the command, you told it to create "random" and "doc.txt". You can delete them with thunar.

- i'm probably gonna add some questions later :P

And I will try to answer them.

I did give you links to some things, and some of my answers were not very specific. That is for you to look things up and learn how to do it, instead of me just telling you. Trust me, you will thank me for that later.

  • Good job on doing some research and using pacaur over yaourt.
  • Anyway, dropbox installs fine with pacaur -S dropbox
  • You can catenate anything you like from the terminal, including your own ascii-art.
  • Conky can be started with conky from the terminal but is usually started via bash with conky -c ~/.conkyfile & conky -c ~/.multipleconkyfiles and so on; usually files are contained in a conky directory of your choice.
  • Removing packages and config files - usage is;  pacman -Rns <package> although removal of dependencies can break your system. This is how yaourt breaks systems :P
  • Icons can be installed manually or through official repositories and AUR.

i installed dropbox buy pacuar -S dropbox, but where is my dropbox folder? i cannot run dropbox.

You can start Dropbox via a terminal by using dropboxd
