Apple ProRes Intermediate Codec

I just wanted to know exactly what Apple pro res is and what the alternatives are on Windows(PC)? I've heard a lot about this codec and how it "blows windows equivalents away" in terms of rendering speed, file size, and quality.

I just wanted to hear if this was actually true and maybe hear some alternatives that are as good or better than the Apple codec.

And please. No pathetic fanboying. I dont want to hear about this from someone who loves apple or hates them. I want to hear an honest opinion despite whether you have a boner for Apple or  PCs....

It is simply a lossy, proprietary video codec; little more.

I suppose the windows equivalent would probably be a wav codec, seeing as it too is a proprietary codec, and one made by Microsoft themselves. Both are pretty bad in terms of file size; both have only very slight compression; both are lossy; both are closed source; both are horrible.Furthermore, they are both moreover in use for the editing of video.

An alternative to either would literally any other video codec - and there are a few of those (list: here). In terms of actual quality, ProRes won't be much better than most codecs, due to being lossy and in comparison to a loseless codec will be somewhat worse. It doesn't really blow anything away at all.
