She has an android tablet and is somewhat computer literate, but I've finally convinced her to get a real phone as opposed to the decade old brick she has. These are the two she picked out from her provider...

I don't personally have any of these phones, but I'm guessing you're referring to these two?
In which case, I don't really see any reason to go for the J3V. Purely looking at the specs, the J7V appears superior is almost every way. As for actual hands on usability, you'll have to wait for someone who's used them to chip in.
