I'm trying to figure out what CPU was in the first computer I remember having and messing with when I was young. I know it was a Compaq Presario with 64mb of ram with a whopping 4gig hard drive and windows 98 and was wondering if anybody would know what CPU was possibly in it. It cost about 500 bucks back in 98 and I know it was before a Pentium 2 because a Pentium was greased lightning compared to mine. It was the shittiest computer known to man even at the time, nothing worked right on it...but it did make me learn about computers trying to fix it.
probubly one of the intel i486's (i486DX2 was a popular one)
maybe an early pentium 1 or celeron (celeron being a slower pentium basicaly.... the i486 came before both)
i486DX2 was early 92' you are probibly looking at a Celeron based on the info givin, just not much you could get back then for much less unless you went AMD.
I can you tell right the fuck now :) Could of been a Celeron as well, but that was almost mid 98. Could of been a K6-2 as well. Or a Cyrix. If Compaq, probably an AMD Geode, yes they existed, but they were made by Cyrix, and if memory serves, made a Linux box out of a Compaq from 98t
A Celeron or an AMD K-6 2... You can stop looking, I know this for a fact. I was there. The first machine I built was a Celeron based PC.
The first Pentium 2 with MMX came out in late '96 - early '97 and by '98 they had P2s faster than that.
PII's were late 97 dude. I had a K6 266 in 96, and that was pretty damn fast. What he had was a Cyrix Geode more than likely, found an desktop Compaq from 98 with identical specs. K6-2 was early 98, and Celerons came mid year that as an answer.
Im pretty sure it was intel. My Dad got it through Dillards when he was working there at the time. I remember when i wanted to play a game on it and it wouldn't let me run it because it required a pentium II or better...man that computer was garbage ahah but I did learn a lot from it. We had that machine until 2004 when got a better computer...Hp media center with a pentium 4 3.2ghz
ah brings back memories this stuff, remember when we bought an intel pentium 133 and games where all good, got it just to play grim fandango :) but im unsure of the release date of the 133
That model Compaq, like Packard Bell at the time, used Cyrix CPU's exclusively, they were cheap as fuck all, had decent performance, but not lightning fast. Could of had a Celeron as noted. Why the morbid curiosity of a very dark time for PCs?
