Any way of unlocking cores on FX CPUs?(4xxx or 6xxx)

So right now I have a FX 4170 quad core, but it has 8 'cores'. For my motherboard I have an ASRock pro 3, stock cooler if that matters. I've looked into it a little bit, but of my understanding AMD does not want you to unlock cores. But, people don't like rules, so they must be broken, so I was wondering if anyone has, or knows how to do this.

turn on advanced calibration in your bios might help, but... if they are cut with lazers then well

sad face for you :(

Could've got the black edition ones

At the time of me building the computer I have right now, I was stupid with computers. If I knew more then I would have gotten a 8350 or 8320.(The 4170 was 125$ at the time)

Going to try, I hope it works.

Won't work, the cores are physically disconnected.

That was what I was worried about. Thanks for saying so.

Could this work with a Phenom II 965 black?

You can unlock phenom. I did that to a friends computer, duel core to quad core, duel core to six core is not the best to do, but I'm almost sure that you can.

Yep, looking around at the moment. A lot of no's and yes's from the internet.

Looked around, did not find it, but I did find out that my mobo has IMMOU, made my day, by far.

unlocking cores was only a thing with older phenoms from a particular serie.
FX series dont have that capabillity.

Yep, native four core. There is a six core phenom so thought maybe locked cores.

Oh well probably for the better, summer is coming.

And hyped for zen?

Can't wait, if zen is as good as it is said, it is going to be awesome, competition for intel again.

It is always fun to watch tech shows, like Paul and Kyle or Jay and Barn talk about AMD vs Intel or Nvidia. With Nvidia and Intel they have the market to a science. AMD as the underdog has to be exciting. So with the new GPUs coming out and what they might look like. Compared to Nvidia's sleep looking shroud for the Titans, there is nothing exciting but just a better card (and 3.5gigs).

I sometimes wish I could time travel. It would be awesome to be able to see what the 390/390x will look like, then their card that should be either replacing the 390/390x or sort of like a titan thing. This will help AMD out a lot with sales.

Instead of investing on cooling for a 4170, you could just get a new an fx 6 core.

I know, I want to get a 8320 with either a NH-D14/15 or a 212 evo.

I know you already figured this out, but to expand upon the Phenom unlocking, AMD used die harvesting to significantly increase yields. Basically the Phenom II silicon tree is as follows:

Thuban - X6
Zosma - X4+X2
Deneb - X4
Heka - X3+X1
Callisto - X2+X2

Most of that bleeds over to other K10 CPUs but not all. There are single and dual-core dies that were not unlockable for a number of reasons.

For FX I do not believe they continued using die harvesting, and simply cut the dies to the appropriate level. Any binning after cutting is for clock rate, not core count.
