Any smart NAS software for a server?

I’ve been currently saving money to create a better NAS server as I’ve been using just a WDMyCloud which takes a while to read/open/save my files as I edit them directly from the NAS and was wondering if there are any type of software can set up like a smart cache feature where it will store the most “active” files on ram or on an SSD. When they become inactive they are just moved back to the HDD’s.

Was thinking about 1 SSD for cache (unless ram can handle this) and maybe 3 HDD’s setup in raid 5.

Thanks

ZFS ARC, keeps the most used files active in RAM for faster access (within a time period).

Take a look at FreeNAS.

This. But You do have to have quite a bit of ram.

You could also try to use hybrid hard drives.

Recommended: Min 8 GiB of RAM for starters, then 1 GiB of RAM per TiB, and then what ever designed RAM you want for ARC or what ever SSD you wan to use for the ARC.

But yeah, large installations will eat a lot of RAM, although you can get away with less, but it won’t yield the best performance. Worth mentioning.

When its a home NAS with one user yourself. You can cut down the spec a little.
