Any Good Free Steam Games?

Hey Everybody,

I just built my computer but I don't have any money to buy games yet because I don't get my pay check until next week.  Are there any good free games on Steam besides Planetside 2 and TF2?

Thanks

Jackson

Alien Swarm is always fun to play with friends.

"Blacklight: Retribution", "APB: Reloaded", "Alien Swarm", "Tribes Ascend" and "Gotham City Imposters" are really fun. I would also recommend you take a look at "Hawken" and "Warface"- they are also going to be FTP,but I'm not sure if they will come out on Steam. Also "Battlefield 1942"(old game I know) is free on Origin.

Super Crate Box is fun.

Depends on what you're looking for.

Tribes: Ascend is great if you liked Tribes.  It's an online FPS with CTF and capture/hold game modes and a couple others.  Fast paced, large open areas, and the people who play it are crazy dedicated.

I spent most of last year glued to LOTRO when it went free to play. LOTRO is a great free MMO.  Pretty generic, but it does generic better than any other free MMO I've played.  Most of the game can be played F2P, but after a point you have to buy zones with whatever points thing they use.  You can get the points by farming mostly.  I actually spent close to $250 on this game :/

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes was a technical disaster when it came out, I'm not sure if it still is but they do some crazy things with the Dialogue card-game system and the three sphere levelling system. I haven't played the F2P version, but I followed the development of this game pretty seriously, and they really tried to break the mold by doing some really interesting stuff.  It was ultimately ruined by poor management. Which makes me cry inside.

Dwarfs!? is fun if you like to lose.  Or maybe I just suck, I dunno.

Im mostly into simulation, fps, fantasy mmos, and action rpgs

Not on steam but League of Legends is one of the most played game ever now, huge cult following. I highly recommend, its based off an Warcraft DotA map

Tribes: Ascend

Alien Swarm isn't bad

:O are we only recommending fps? Dungeon Fighter Online is pretty damn good, if 2d sprites/king of fighters gameplay dont fit your palate vindictus (also from nexon) is pretty decent. Tribes is good, Alliance of Valiant Arms is pretty decent (kind of dead since the competetive community is just a facade to send the same team to korea every year), Blacklight is good kinda pay to win though. You cant go wrong, only thing you're wasting is your time.

Tribes Ascend - Alien Swarm - Battelfield 1942 (old, but a fun classic - is free on origin)

Then there's Arma 2, the free to play version has no mod support last time I checked (so no dayz) and has shitty, blured textures, but it is still the best military simulation out there - it's great fun if you join a clan who knows what they're doing. The full premium version includes mod support (so you get to play dayz) and has full HD graphics, but overall it is pretty badly optimized. So unless you have a US military super computer you can't run the game maxed out with a steady 60fps.

You can also download source (half life 2) mods for free now that the sdk base is free to download, there are some pretty good mods out there.

You could also look into indie games, most are either free or dirt cheap.

You could also... Torrenn... I mean go to websites like The Pirate baa... To uhhh... 'preview' games *wink*

"Black Mesa Source" is an amazing mod done in the source engine - it's a total remake of Half life 1 in the source engine. Technically it's a mod, but you get a full length games value, pretty sure you can download it for free. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lul60ixy_40

There are all of the mods for Half life, both the first one and HL2. Before Valve sold games from other companys it supported the modding community a bit. There are several Half Life 2 single player mods as well as multiplayers ones too.

You could just go the the Free to Play section from steam store. Most of them are MMO's though, some people are a bit iffy around them seeing how they sap into ones life xD

You could also use reward based sites to get free steam games too. I've been using one since Summer and requested a couple of games. You earn points on their site with which you can requests games from steam - pretty much any game from Steam catalog you can get and they will steam gift it directly to you. The best times to use these points are during sale periods. So since summer I've been casually logging on and getting a few points (a couple minutes a day), and now I have $300 worth in points ready to spend once the Winter Sale starts (hopefully in next couple of days).

If you're still unsure, have a look at their forums. They have been gifting people games since 2010 with people posting on daily basis.

Metro 2033 is free if you like the facebook page for the game.

Tribes ascend is definitely a great choice, although tf2 is definitely my favourite free to play game at the moment, with Tribes running it a close second. I found that League of legends is quite a good RTS, quite simple and easy to pick up, although of course tactics and teamwork make it more complex. If you can get to it before the offer ends metro 2033 is free atm. Its quite a short game, but a pretty good one nonetheless, I really liked it.

It is free, and it is fantastic.

Man the good old days 1942 I still have it on cd-rom I played the fucking shit out of that game and really every battlefield game before BF3

Thank you for posting this article. My friend who goes to a beauty training school enjoyed reading this.

Planet Side 2 is a great game for free.
