Any experience with remote desktop on tablets?

In short: anybody tried connecting a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to a tablet,  connecting tablet into a monitor (possibly) and running remote desktop.

I always looked at tablets as premium toys,  it'd be nice to have one for reading and consuming media but it's not really productive in any way there for its a waist of money.

Now I'm in a situation where I need remote desktop on work (to do more work) and tablets have gotten better and cheaper. So I wanna know if that's a good experience.

I know this stuff is possible but I can't really find any quality media that covered this.

Sure I could do this stuff on my phone but a tablet would come in handy when I'm on the go.

Probably pricey but maybe a surface pro. This way you can run remote desktop with 3rd party software if you like Putty and have a full windows experience.

Microsoft just came out with an Android version of remote desktop. It's very usable with my Nexus 7, even if the screen is a little small. It works with USB OTG/bluetooth keyboard/mouse as far as I know and it works very well, as long as you have a good connection, that is.

EDIT: This would work on any Android tablet, I just said the Nexus 7 because it's incredibly cheap and it won't just be useful for Remote Desktop.

Yeah, I know it's possible but I wanna know how usable it is, did you try it? What programs did you try using trough it and how was the experience aside from the screen size?

Surface is to expensive, I could get an android tablet much cheaper and do the same, I want to hear from people who did this with their tablets so I don't end up spending the money on a bad experience.

RealVNC Has pretty good Remote Desktop support for Tablet devices. I've also used Kainy for gaming remote desktop to tablet. But in my experience latency is a huge issue with that. and if something crashes or obstructs the server software on your computer, there's nothing you can do about it till you get back to your computer.

When it came to using the tablet to just control the computer mouse and Keyboard I used Unified Remote, It worked better than expected for me. There is plenty of other software that do about the same thing, you just have to search for it.

As for tablets a waste of money, it depends on how you look at it. Yes, its for consuming media, but it's possible to use your tablet productively. It really is just a simplified computer. You can pretty much do what you can on a tablet what you can do on a computer with limitations of control and specifications of the hardware in mind. There are even ways to install operating systems like Ubuntu or Windows 8 on the tablet itself.

The problem with any remote desktop is there will be a lag, but as long as you're not trying to game it should work just fine. I can recommend Splashtop, it has lots of features and different views, including a fully supported Windows 8 mode including all gestures. The only downfall is Splashtop will only work if you are on the same wifi as the host computer Unless you want to pay for a subscription.

Also I highly recommend Google Remote desktop it is free and works very well. I am currently using it right now to log onto my wife's computer from halfway across the world and help her out with any troubleshooting and watching videos together.

There are a few other clients i have tried but these two are my top two choices. Remember that you will have to install the client on the host computer with either of these apps. you can find the Chrome Remote desktop in the chrome web store.

I use my tablet with a keyboard and Microsoft's remote desktop every day in class and it works great. Never go 3rd party if you don't have to. Microsoft has a fantastic Remote Desktop app on android and almost all versions of windows support it native. Simply forward port 3389 if you're gutsy enough and you can access your computer from anywhere. [However I recommend using an encrypted VPN] I myself have a nexus 10 that I do this on with only a keyboard as touch works fine for mouse input, but I can guarantee that mouse and keyboard input work just as effortlessly as if you were sitting in front of the computer yourself, on Android of course [iOS doesn't support mouse input].

As far as lag, like I said, if you go native, it's almost non-existent. Microsoft has about the best remote protocol that there is and, obviously depending on your connection latency, works great in minimal bandwidth environments.

I used Remote Desktop a lot on the Surface RT when I was travelling. Of course it depends on the kind of internet connection you have, but if you have to look something up in your company network, I was allways happy to have it. It's not even that pricy.

I would rather carry a laptop or a surface for what you are wanting.  Splashtop is fine if you are on the same network but spending the extra dough on it is annoying when you have free alternatives that are decent.  Chrome remote desktop is good but a little odd.   The microsoft remote desktop is decent.  I just cant stand squishing a whatever sized monitor down to 7 inches and using the touch inputs.  you can use a mouse and keyboard with android but why would you sacrifice the mobility for having that on a touch based device.  I found it annoying walking around with a keyboard for my tablet

the samsung galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition you can actuly put a bluetooth mouse and keyboard on it and it actully has a curser like on a windows or linux laptop or desktop has and with the 10.1in screen its great for remoting in to another pc with teamviewer i do it all the time at work

It's hilarious to swing by a topic which you thought was recent, only to discover that you already responded 4 months ago.
