Another Build/Upgrade PC :)

Hi all, my kid is going to upgrade his PC, mainly because Destiny2 is coming soon
I have the motherboard, CPU, etc more or less sorted out, the RAM is another issue

The motherboard: Fatal1ty X370 Gaming K4 (not purchased yet)

The CPU: Ryzen7 1700x (not purchased yet)

Cooler: H110i Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (Not purchased yet)

Storage: 256GB Sandisk X400 M.2 (for the OS), 500GB Samsung Evo 840 SSD (Probably 2 in a Raid 0 configuration) (Reused/Purchased).

Graphics: Club 3D AMD Radeon R9 380 4 GB RoyalQueen OC (Reused from his current PC)

PSU: 850 Watt, I can’t remember the brand, but it is a stable good quality PSU. (Reused from his current PC).

RAM??
I am leaning towards 32GB (just because  ) However that could be reduced to 16GB to keep the cost down.

I have been reading a lot, but I am still unsure which RAM would give the best performance & stability.
We are not going for overclocking the system, which is the reason I chose the AsRock K4 gaming since the 12 Power Phase Design should be enough ,also the price for the AsRock Professional Gaming costs approx. 150 USD more than the K4.
I am looking for speed, & stability, but not wanting to break his bank account in the process.

Looking forward to your replies and insight in this matter.

I don’t know about Destiny’s requirements in particular, but in general an 8-core is complete overkill for a R9 380. And since this appears to be mostly a gaming build the 1700x is over the top regardless of GPU. Those 8 cores won’t do much for games after all.

16 GB is plenty

Especially considering the current RAM prices

go with 16gb ram and sell that old GPU. Use the savings to buy a better one.

Maby sell your GPU and pick up the AMD Vega Bundle and get your mainboard/CPU 100€ cheaper.
But there are no reviews out, so keep that in mind. But if you can wait, this might be a good option.

why are you wanting to put ssd in raid 0 for gaming?

In the old days, it was used to increase read/write speed, and increase total storage space, since in raid 0 they double the storage space. I do however, not know if that still is the case with modern SSD’s, if there is nothing gained in setting them to Raid 0, we will probably opt for an 750GB or 1 TB SSD.

But which RAM would be best for the system with the K4 motherboard.

AsRock has this note on their webpage: Note6: Each RAM whose frequency is 3000 will downgrade to 2933 with Fatal1ty X370 Gaming K4.

http://www.asrock.com/MB/AMD/Fatal1ty%20X370%20Gaming%20K4/index.asp#Memory

So I am guessing that getting faster RAM than that would be waste of money.
Where I get confused is whether to look for Dual Sided Dual Rank, or Single Sided Single Rank?
Also going for a low cas latency should also be a part of the equation?

Will look into this Vega bundle, thanks for the heads up

just buy a boot disk and a small steam cache + HDD fam. Use the surplus for a decent GPU

cheaper and covers load times and responsiveness. SSD raid 0 is incredibly wasteful.

The SSDs for RAID are already purchased:

I’m sorry we couldn’t get to him sooner.

No problem, I got them very cheap, and the M.2 was free
If we do not do Raid0, we just put the two SSD’s as single drives in the PC

Yeah do that and with the ram you should be able to overclock it correct?

Destiny 2 is a game.

Games do not scale well from CPU/Memory/Disk performance.

They scale about 95-100% from the GPU only. If he wants to be prepared for Destiny 2 get a better GPU.

So your current card is about the same as a 1050Ti/GTX770. That is a pretty weak GPU by modern standards. A 1050 Ti 4GB is $120 after shipping where I live.

Why are you planning on spending $300 on a CPU and $0 on a GPU if your target application is gaming? o_O

Note that things are different if he just wants an excuse to upgrade and does not care about actual performance in Destiny 2.

But, if he does care that his game runs well, then take all the money you were planning on spending and spend every last pennty on the most expensive (gaming) GPU you can afford.

(top)
GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, or the (lower)
GeForce GTX 1080.
RX Vega, flagship model.
980Ti/1070.
980/RX 580/RX 480/GTX 1060 6GB
1060 3GB
(lower)

Edit: I actually did some benchmarks on the 1050 Ti and how well is scales based upon different CPUs.

Synthetics are different, but in actual games, the scaling is negligible.

Want Destiny 2 to perform well? Get a better GPU, nothing else matters.

whats the current rig hes using?

It is a Phenom II X4 965 BE.
With 8GB DDR3
the GPU is as stated a Club 3D AMD Radeon R9 380 4 GB RoyalQueen OC
The motherboard is an ASUS ROG motherboard, I can’t quite remember the exact model.

What is most important for him is that the game runs smoothly, if that means that some of the graphic settings have to be reduced a bit then that is OK with him. He is not going above 1080p gaming.

I would thank you all for the input so far, but setting aside the GPU issue, for the AsRock motherboard, and 1700x CPU, what would be the best performing RAM for this system, either in 16GB or 32GB?

ok so cpu upgrade is in order.
i would look at the asus prime board https://pcpartpicker.com/product/PHyxFT/asus-prime-x370-a-atx-am4-motherboard-prime-x370-a it’s on sale for 99$ atm and it has an external clock generator meaning you can use higher clocked ram. it also got some pretty good overclocking results over at oc3dtv.
for ram check out the tridentZ and the team T force ram. both use samsung B die memory which is the best for ryzen. the agesa update should allow up to 4ghz memory but varies from board to board.
you only need 8gb really and 16 will only really be used on chrome if hes just gaming.
also i would look at upgrading the gpu soonish. upgrading it will have a bigger effect then just about anything else as far as frame rates go, however upgrading the cpu should help with min frame rate a lot and make the experience feel a lot better.

Then upgrade your GPU before your CPU.

If the focus is gaming:

Sell GPU (if you do it before vega is out you will get even more for it i think)

buy a b350 mobo and a 1400 or 1600 (4 or 6 cores)

spend the rest on a nice GPU

PS: If you really need an 8 core CPU Buy the 1700 and overclock it to an 1800x

Thank you for the reply.
I will check out the Trident RAM, and the Asus Prime motherboard

To all other, I get that the GPU is outdated, that will be step 2, so please refrain from further comments about the GPU.
Thank you.

That X370 board basically has a B350 board level VRM. It is not a good idea to overclock a Ryzen 7 on one of those, at least I would not go full tilt on that. Also I doubt it really has an external clock gen. But that isn’t a big deal anymore anyway.

The Asus Prime X370 Pro has a nice VRM and I can confirm it will push as much power as needed for any AM4 chip. There is a X370 Strix something which is basically the same board in a fancy dress. Also some ASRocks and Gigabytes are supposed to be really good but personally I like the Asus UEFI and so on.

Trident Z is great but pricey. I am running four 8GB sticks of G.Skill Ripjaws V 3200 at 2933MHz and it’s fine. I would go with 16GB in two sticks for a pure gaming system, simply because I find it silly to run 8GB on a Ryzen 7.

Vega might be a nice idea, the price does seem to fit. But I would wait for the third party cards, stock blower style cooler is … not optimal.
