Ok so I have an iphone 4s right now and it's extremely slow. My contract ends this month and ive been wanting to get an android phone BUT all of a sudden this whole complete iphone encryption update comes along and even logan seems to believe it (wayyyyyyyyyyy out of left field of him in my opinion but tek is tek) so 2 things: 1) which is the more secure device (or os i guess) and 2) if i were to get an android, which one should i get? (been thinking about the moto x and htc one m8)
Well TBH it is a nice feature but
A) Android is coming out with something very similar soon.
B) While privacy is important and I don't agree with what the government and law enforcement is doing, the device encryption isn't too big of a deal to me. Especially when I'd have to buy a locked down and gimped device to get it.
I'm not an expert when it comes to security so I really can't tell you which one is more secure. I would guess iOS would be more secure because of its BSD base and the fact it is so locked down. Android is more open so therefore more susceptible to security vulnerabilities theoretically. I do know Apple doesn't like to admit or fix security vulnerabilities though so its a wash IMO.
I would go Android.
The Moto X, HTC One M8, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 are good options. There is also the currently available Nexus 5 and the Nexus 6 which will be available soon. Your call. Look at the specs and features and read some reviews and ask yourself what you want in a phone and make your decision then.
Android 5.0 will have the same encryption feature, so that is out of the equation.
As for which Android device to get, I have the first gen Moto X, and it's wonderful. the second Gen is even better, so I would suggest that.
If you're a power user, the Droid Maxx (NOT the droid razr Maxx) Has a great screen, and a LOOOOONG battery life. 48 hours of typical use before needing a recharge.
1.android already had and still has full phone encryption. they have had it for awhile. under settings then security .
2. if you want privacy get an android phone and root it and install stock google
Yeah, but as of 5.0, its on by default, as well as the ART runtime. So even casual users will have it.
is 5.0 out yet or no? if no then when?
Was announced a couple of days ago, and should be rolling out to GPE devices as well as Nexus 4,5,7,9(idk about 10)

Other manufacturers have also confirmed that upgrades will come in the future: http://www.redmondpie.com/android-5.0-lollipop-for-samsung-htc-sony-motorola-lg-list-of-supported-devices/
i fail to see how installing "stock google" will allow you privacy. isn't the whole point of rooting your phone to de-google it?
For me the "whole point of rooting" was to get away from carrier and manufactures customisation. I own a Galaxy S3, so getting rid of touchwiz was a strong motivator. Also as the phone is now quite old I was stuck on an older version of Android. By going to CyanogenMod my phone became faster and gained features.
Back to the original posters question of iPhone v Android Barnacules did a very good review from the perspective of an iPhone user. Surprisingly well balanced...

Hey man, I up graded from the iPhone 4s to the HTC M8. WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE. haha for real, if your use to the user interface of the iPhones than stay with them, after all, the interface is what matters, its how you use the phone. So, my advice to you is find someone that has an android phone and play with it a few days before you buy something you will regret. My biggest complain about the M8 is the volume, for music and alarms, even the ringer on the phone will blow you out, but you can't hear anything on the phone and the biggest part of your conversation will be "what did you say, I didn't hear you". Then its when I try to use the phone android always defaults back to the number key pad and the last person you talked to, I like how iPhone would open up straight to call history, so I can at one glance see missed calls and completed calls. Also android will not let you pick and choose what order to listen to voicemail, like you can on the iPhone, you can of course "BUY" another app to let you do that. Which brings up my last point, if your use to the apple phone and how simple it is to use then stay with it, I use my for what it is a phone with mp3 and a few simple app, (like most people even if they want to act like tech gods), the android phones are over complicated and are not user friendly, you can make them that way, and you can make them as simple as an iPhone, that all depends on how much money your willing to spend on apps to make it more user friendly.
Tinkers toy: Android
Phone that just-works: iPhones
Its a matter of preference really. if your whole multimedia system is centred around apple products, then why choose android? But if you're looking into a new experience, choose android. Sure, android is not perfect, BUT, you can make it that way (according to your preference) by rooting and flashing custom ROMs.
Android phones to look for right now: Nexus 5, OnePlus One, Nexus 6, Sony Z (series, i love em for the waterproof and killer specs).
All are rootable. Enjoy!
This.
If you like iOS, stay with it. I went from a iPod Touch 5 to a One M8. There was a transfer period, but I still feel that Apple's simple and fluid OS is more for me. I had to learn about rooting, S-Off, and unlocking the bootloader to change 2-3 things that I didn't like or were buggy about the experience.
I do watch plenty of YouTube, so having both of my ears receiving sound from my One m8 may be it's main feature. It works, and I can tolerate it(and have to for 2 years), but I still prefer iOS's experience.
