I used to be in to woodworking quite a bit, and I love the way wood can look when stained and lacquered. I started thinking about computers as well, and an idea came in to my mind. How many of you think that a wooden computer case could look attractive?
I almost feel like you could pull it off if done right. I wouldn't do a window, and I'd keep the LED's white or else it would clash horribly. The only thing to consider here is safety. Metal plates for mounting would be a good idea so that the would doesn't get burned/catch on fire.
I've been thinking of drawing up a few prototypes. What do you guys think?
Ive seen a few custom ones somewhere and it honestly looks amazing, its extremely elegant, id suggest using a metal backplate for the motherboard tray and some rubber standoffs for heardrive mounting though.
Some of those are really nice, actually. My only gripe is that I actually think he was over-complicating it. I think it should actually be much more simply and plain, and as quiet as possible.
Wood also has much better sound absorbtion than metal/plastic, which was one reason for going this route.
A wooden pc case would look awesome, id be interested to see your prototype drawings. However dont wooden cases heat up more easily than metal ones? For example if you stick your hand in a wooden draw its slightly warmer than the air around it. And also, what kind of wood would you use, I think a light wood with dark rings (i forget the name for them) would look quite nice lacquered.
I was thinking of making a wooden pc case about a year back, although i never got any further than drawings (which might be around somewhere).
Also I saw a build a while back where the creator used leather in their wooden case (not loads of it, he used it in places such as on the SSD cage and on the side pannel) Perhaps that would be a good idea as it could improve noise dampening, aspecially around fans.
