mint 18 near fresh install (did all the first time boot updates) using kernel 4.8.4 , 4.4.0-21 , or 4.4.0-45 makes no difference for my problem. so i have followed the install instructions from https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=229229 i am using an amd 8350 fx on a asus crosshair v formula gfx card is sapphire 29 290 trix oc
and i got the files installed properly i think. i am part of the video group and i have removed the radeon xorg drivers. when i use sudo lshw -c video the output i now get is
i am using MATE for my DE. main problem is sluggish interface mouse movements can be delayed by 2-3 seconds( happens with "radeon" drivers installed and with out them) . have not installed any games yet i so dont know if there are any major issues with them. did not want to try either with having the display unclaimed showing up when i used sudo lshw -c video. ah thanks for clarifying that mint come with AMDGPU by default. it looked like it was xorg that was default to me. using the directions from AMD directly when i go to install i get OS not supported. which is why i was following the mint guide. i have also have a dump of my boot logs if you want it ( dont know what im looking at or for in there).
I would say that if you are using the 4.4 kernel then go for the AMDGPU-PRO. I do not think it is supported (officially) yet for newer kernels. For newer kernels the default AMDGPU should be a better choice. But as far as I know the 290 support is experimental in the 4.8 kernel (or has some performance issues). That might be the reason for some of the issues are having, thus should improved with newer kernels. Could be just a general support issue that might be solved with the next version.
All kernels now come with AMDGPU+MESA pre-installed btw,
:) many thanks going to flush the install of AMDGPU-PRO now and go back to the default for 4.8 and see what happens. from what i have been reading 290/ 290x should be fully supported but mint has been slow to adopt changes and enable it by default in the kernel.( attempted to enable it but could not get it to work. lack of kernel knowledge on my part. )
Mint has the 4.4 as a default kernel...Not the 4.8. That is the issue. And last time (sometime yesterday) i checked I did not see the 4.8 integrated in the kernel update in the manager. Meaning that you have to manually install 4.8 yourself.
Also if you have the 4.8 in order to install the AMDGPU-PRO correctly you have to use this edit :
AS the 16.10 ubuntu also has the 4.8 by default and thus it should work for Mint using the 4.8 the same way.
