AMD vs Intel for streaming

I've been thinking about what CPU would be better for streaming. People say the FX 8350 is better for streaming even an admin and moderator agreed on the OBS forum, but if I talk to someone they will yell intel is way better than AMD for everything. Can someone help me clear things up because I don't completely understand. I understand PCs and all but which is better for streaming is boggling my mind.

They are actually pretty equal. Depends on what you want really. If you pick up an intel CPU with integrated graphics you can use intel quick sync to stream. If you pick up an FX 8 core, you have all the cores to power your stream with. Either way, you can stream pretty easily. I use a 4670K to stream using quick sync and it runs smooth as butter, with zero cpu overhead. But an 8 core has more cores than most games utilize so the cpu overhead from streaming is negligible. So in the end they are practically equal.

But QuickSync requires a higher bitrate and some people out there don't have the download for that higher bitrate which means people will be excluded from watching the stream due to the bitrate.

does it really? because I haven't noticed it sucking up much more bitrate than before using quick sync. I started streaming before quick sync even existed, hell it was before shadowplay was a thing too. I have the option of using x.264 decoding from the CPU, quick sync from the iGPU, and X.264 decoding straight from my graphics card via shadowplay. The shadowplay option was the most efficient but its not the most stable thing. And quick sync and the X264 decoding on the CPU seemed relatively close. Quick sync didn't look quite as good, but it used 0 CPU time, so that made up for it. I think what you are talking about is that quick sync doesn't compress the video stream as much as x264 decoding off the CPU. This isn't entirely true. It depends on your settings. You can set it to compress more (in exchange for lower quality) or compress less and have higher quality. Considering that my upload speed is horrible, and quick sync has actually been more stable (network wise) than X264 decoding off the CPU, it is my go to for OBS streaming. If you have even worse upload speed than me, I suggest getting an AMD 8 core and overclock the hell out of it, then use dem cores to compress the shit out of your video stream so that you can minimize the bitrate.

Remember something though, the more you compress the video stream, the more processing power it takes, and it also takes more processing power to decode it. So you need to find a balance between the strength of your CPU and the strength of your Network.

My up is not a problem. I posted my Internet speed test results on my twitch channel and I will definitely will go for the FX 8320 and probably slap a NH-15 or H110 on it.

sounds good. I wish you the best of luck! See ya on the streams :)

quick sync sucks for encoding anything with streaming. just stick with the h264 with a decent encoding settings and bitrate. ALSO.. don't use the cbr as it degrades your stream quite a bit and put the quality preset to 10 "it does not matter at all with obs compared to xshit"

i'm using a 5k bitrate for both with NO cbr at 720p and it at most uses 3500.

audio set to AAC at 48 hz with bitrate to 160.

x264 preset to ultra, profile to main, key set to 2 and allow 61-120 fps in video. theses setting is what allows my stream to look like i have a boss pc when i don't.

your network can support a bitrate of 3500? nice. I wish I had internet like that. I am topped out at a bitrate of 2000, and it dips down to 1800 sometimes. 720p 30 fps. Video quality looks great, audio is clear. Get some pixel tearing during some particularly high motion scenes or if there is motion blur in game,

Its also good to see someone supporting OBS over Xsplit.

my network can support 10mpbs up. twitch can only max at 7.2k tho. other than that it takes some fine tuning to get obs working the way it should be running.

My network can handle 38 mbs up... Not to be bragging because its a bit unnecessary

FX 8 core cpu´s are great for gaming + streaming. ☺

Meanwhile...

Don't even get my started on slow upload speeds.

Such BULLSHIT comcast, I pay for their fastest available consumer internet in my area (the only faster package is commercial and its a very big price gap) and this is all they deliver.

I'm sorry, but my evil Verizon connection leads the smackdown of all your connections.

I would sacrifice kittens for that internet speed

The ironic part that it isn't the highest internet package.

The FX 8 core will probably be better than a similarly priced i5-- but would fall behind an i7 because Hyperthreading fills much of the gap. It all depends on clock speed/overclocking-- but the FX can keep up with an i7 in many situations as well when overclocked.
