So im not new to pc building but i still dont know all the answers. I built my first system with an AMD A8 5600k apu and after a few years im planning on upgrading to an I7 6700k with a asus Z170 motherboard. I have my OS (windows 7 but planning on going with windows 10 for this build) on an ssd boot all my files and whatnot on separate drives.
My question, Is there any considerations or precautions i should take when re installing all the new hardware and OS in my pre existing system or should it just be a walk in the park?
Forgot to mention im planning on formatting m ssd for the new install.
My only suggestion is back up all of your files on an external hard drive encase when you put back your old hdd it reformats everything.
Better off saving some cash with the non K part and a more budget board, fps performance is within 10fps generally

Not saying your wrong. In fact if the OP is gonna use his old Ram your absolutely right. Just thought i would mention it.
This article with DDR4 found almost no increase in game performance either.

in other words.....my bad.
Im not 100% set on any hardware as of yet but am sure its going to be something on the mid range to high end of intel. You can still run DDR3 on skylake?
not worth doing/worrying about, don't know if they even make those boards anymore
but you need low voltage DDR3 for it
If they are, then they're going to be limited.
Just stick to Haswell/Broadwell based motherboards for now. Otherwise you're going to spend more money on upgrading, let alone getting new memory sticks for it.
Depends a bit on your budget.
If the system is mainly ment for gaming, i would indeed go with the 6700K.
As for the motherboard i would say Asus Z170-A would be a nice entry level choice, with some good overclockability.
If you like a slightly more advanced motherboard, then the Asus Maximus VIII Hero is a board that i could realy recommend.
As far as DDR4 memory kits are concerned, it will not realy matter a whole lot which set you pick.
But if you want a decent kit, then i could highly recommend G.skill TridentZ kits.
But it would be nice if you could give us some budget indication wenn you ever need any help for selecting new parts.
As far as installing windows10 on your new build.
If your plan is to use a sepperate SSD for just your OS which is something i allways highly recommend, then there isnt realy much you should take care off before.
You can just install a fresh copy of windows10 directly to the SSD on your new hardware if you buy a windows10 license aswell ofc..
Of course backup the data from your current main OS drive that you dont want to loose.
I guess everyone covered all the basics in the previous answers. My suggestion is to avoid at all costs installing Windows with all the drives you have in your system connected. I say that because if you keep all the drives connected while you install Windows on the SSD Windows will start using the other drives to allocate some stuff. And if that happens you can't boot Windows without all the drives connected because of that.
Regarding the hardware I would invest as much as you think is reasonable to be set for the next 5 years or so and not be worried about upgrades of any kind, especially if you're talking about motherboard + CPU combo. If you get a really really good CPU and motherboard to work with you're only going to upgrade maybe the RAM, GPU and storage wich are overall usually less expensive and require a lot less effort to be changed. So my idea is go for the 6700K + Maximus VIII Hero + G.Skill DDR4 and be done with those things for a loong time.
It is mostly going to be for gaming. Budget isnt really an issue since its just these three componants im replacing and im alreadt pretty set on what i wanr to get. I already own a 980ti so im set in the graphics department. My main concern was loosing or corrupting any data on a new install switching from an amd system to intel but from the sounds of it, just wiping my boot drive and going fresh is a pretty safe bet.
