AMD RX 480 Tech of Tomorrow Review and Benchies

Great for a cheap upgrade for 1080P gamers.

Looks like ToT was a bit early on the NDA. I think it lifts at 9AM EST.

I think you're right. With all the BS Elric has gone throuh over the years I think people might let it slide.

For his sake, I hope so. NDAs should be taken seriously, and I'm sure some people might complain about "special treatment", but it's only a few hours early, and the poor guy has been through so much over the past few years. Hopefully AMD won't "blacklist" him from future early samples or anything like that.

Let's just assume he thought he was setting the publish time to 6am Cali time but accidentally set it to 6am East.

The 970 EXOC I assume refers to the absolute fastest 970 out there, the Galax 970 EXOC, which adds a couple of fps even over some of the other custom 970s. I think it a reference 970 or at least a more basic custom 970 would've been a fairer comparison.

I'd love to see benchmarks on the 4GB 480 as well, because that's what's really going to be the budget king for 1080p.

On 1080 I don't think you would see a difference between the two.

So it is right where it was expected to be.

I find the "DX12 games" always interesting

I agree about the card choice (although the EXOC could just be what he had onhand). A 970 (at least where I've looked) costs more to begin with, so using a highly overclocked card does seem uneven. That said, I think the 980 is still relevant due to the widely spread (and narrowly believed) rumor that the 480 would show similar performance to a 980.

Regarding the 4GB/8GB comment, I'm sure the 4GB will be plenty for 1080p. On the other hand, if I can get the 8GB for $30-$40 more, I'll do so just based on the idea that I will probably get a new monitor before I want to upgrade my video card again. And, if Crossfired 480s indeed perform similarly or better than a 1080 like they've claimed, I might rock a pair of 8GBs for many years.

This isn't bad at all. It's exactly what it was supposed to be. Perhaps better when you take into account Dx12 performance. The card handles every Dx11 game you throw at it, and Dx11 is just about done so it's not like we need to worry about upcoming Dx11 titles. It performs really well in Dx12 and with further drivers it will preform even better. For the price you really can't complain. But those temps man. Those temps are scary. Definitely will wait for aftermarket model.

Yeah the temps are the only thing that is disappointing. Hopefully they will add 3p coolers in a few weeks.

I expect Gamers Nexus to do a ghetto hybrid for the RX 480 stock like they did for the GTX 1080 FE, should be entertaining at least.

What's up with AMD crushing on Hitman btw?

optimization

Rise of the Tomb Raider is the opposite. I guess it is good optimization and luck.

So far... underwhelming.
Their stock is going to take a serious hit.

OK, the other reviews are up. Looks like it is basically a GTX 970 with a big of an edge with DX12. For the price, that's brilliant.

Maybe... if the 970 didn't cost around $190 right now on the used/refurbished market.

Super excited for this to be honest, at least myself because I don't have a PC to upgrade or anything, I start from 0. I wasn't going to play on 1440p anyway, 1080 is my sweetspot. I'm not going to buy anything until the prices come down and the aftermarket coolers show their potential.

So yeah, nice nice. I will lurk this post quite a bit.

Their stock is still up. I don't think.it will fall that much as a result tbh.

But yeah I'm disappointed. The power consumption is pathetic. It's nearly the same as a 970... for the same performance. On 14nm.
