Many of our assumptions of re-badging were correct it seems.
AMD re-badging the 290x to the 390x for giving it a minor architectural improvement (GCN 1.2/1.3 instead of 1.1) and HBM is probably so that AMD can get Gen 1 HBM out of the way (Which is limited to 4GB as they already said) to make way for Gen 2 HBM which will not be limited to 4GB. This will probably be applied to the Rx 400 series.
Still though the 290x is old and re-badging it AGAIN means AMD fans will be quite annoyed and to be fair at this rate AMD is probably losing money insanely quickly. I can't imagine this working out for them

Yummy pricing (Prices were shown last night on WCCF) that makes the 390X cheaper than the current 8gb 290x version
rumors been out for quite a bit already.
regardless. the rebrand is why i decided to crossfire my current setup. also hopefully see some benefits from dx12
Me too! I see a second 290x or 390x in my future. Nothing like gambling! :)
290X hasn't been rebadged before. Maybe you meant 7970/280X? Even so, that is being moved from Tahiti to Tonga.
Not really. With restructures and decreased overhead they've stayed well in the black and have even kept around $1 Bln in reserve cash. Decreased profits don't mean money lost, since they can just pull cash from investments and restructure overhead continuously. Even if AMD is hurting by most standards, they are still a billion dollar company.
