So, there's another thread in here going around me discussing my potential LiteCoin mining rig, turns out I am going to have to build a whole new rig from scratch, turns out this old one I had lying around has a burnt out CPU and the RAM is fucked, plus the MOBO is like 7 years old.
Got a NZXT 210 case, SeaSonic's 80-bronze 650W PSU, and I'll be using a DDR3 1600Mhz 4GB RAM stick that I had from a previously working rig setup.
This is the Mobo I wish to use, because it will be for cryptocurrency mining so I want enough PCI-e slots now so I can add more GPUs later, this seemed like the best value for my money.
But I haven't played with AMD equipment in years, I don't know all of the recent compatibility information, is there a difference between the AMD3+ socket and the AMD3? Because I wanted to pair this MOBO with a CPU I used to use (have to buy a new one cause someone else is using my previous one) which is this, Im sure you all know it.
But if those two are not compatible then would you guys mind throwing out CPU suggestions, all I want is the thing to boot and run the necessary applications for coin mining. It would be nice if the CPU was decent enough that I could also run a CPU miner along side the GPU ones, but I dont wanna spend like over 120 dollars for a CPU, really 100 would be ideal. But I am open to all suggestions, thanks!
That Motherboard is different, there a particular reason why you suggested that one over the one I linked before? Also I heard that the 6 core black edition is actually slower than the 4 core, could I be mistaken?
Yes, the phenom will work in an AM3+ platform. I'll tell you this now - as a previous owner of that mobo, it is really nice, and I had zero problems with it. I replaced it for a Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3, though. There are a few things to consider.
It has a single 2.0 x16 speed slot, the first one. The second one runs at x8 and the third at x4. You CAN SLI and xfire on this board at x8 speeds, however. (and yes, that's confirmed working.)
Downsides are that obviously since it's a 970 chipset you can't run dual/triple cards at full speed. It just aint gonna happen. To do that, you need the 990FX chipset, which i would really recommend going with anyway because they are simply nicer built boards. I like my board, the GA-990FXA-UD3. Yes, it's more expensive, but it has better features. 8+2 power phase design, and four PCI-E 2.0 slots, 2 of which run at x16 and two of which run at x4. So there's something to consider.
BUT if you have to buy a new cpu anyway, don't go for a phenom. Just do it and get an FX chip. They are excellent.
Alright I'll go with that board then, It's only 30 bucks more and does a lot more from the other.
Quick question though, if I run two more cards in the x4 PCI-E, what will that mean in terms of using them, like how limited are they if I want to use them later on for coin mining (not using them for playing games)
Also which FX chip would you recommend, remember not looking for anything crazy just something that will run everything and maybe if it's good enough, use it to CPU mine as well.
Well if you ran four cards total (which, make sure the board is capable of that) then the speeds of all of them would be reduced to x4, which is pretty slow. I don't know much about mining, though.
My advice? Get two of the absolutle best cards you can afford.
As for the processor, I'd recommend whichever quad core FX suits your fancy, or the FX 6100 or 6300. Stay away from the 6200, though.
