AMD R9 390 Drivers causing havok

Hello world!
Brief backstory - my old harddrive exploded, so when I bought a new one it seemed like a good chance to noob it up with Linux. I brought with me two AMD R9 390s running crossfire on a Z170A SLI PLUS ATX LGA1151 Motherboard.

I installed Ubuntu, and after installing the AMDGPU drivers I was able to get the blackscreening to stop. The only problem I have left is that when I try to update Ubuntu to the latest kernel (4.18.8) my sound dies. The sound settings menu shows DummyOutput. The kernel installed by default is 4.15, and I’ve since reverted to that one because I like sound. Any higher kernel version than that (that I’ve tried) also causes the DummyOutput error.

My endgame here is getting wine/vulkan/lutris to work. I haven’t tried installing them yet because every guide I’ve dug up emphasizes the importance of using the latest kernel, and as I mentioned before, I like having sound.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Should I forge ahead with my 14.5 kernel? Or is there a resolution for the no sound error in more recent kernels? I already tried reloading/reinstalling alsa and pulse on the newer kernels.

Thanks in advance!

I have a 390x on my Fedora machine and I have all sorts of trouble with my gpu latelty. (I didn’t use to be that bad…) I have tried upgrading the kernel and that helped some but Fedora had some issues still on the Distro side of things.

One of the big improvements for me was switching off of Wayland and going back to XOrg. Dual-monitor/Freesync issues aside, all of the Xorg DE’s that I tried were basically identical. I used i3 for a while but ended up with enlightenment. If you have Gnome installed then you should be able to try gnoome on xorg from your login screen.
