A few weeks ago and I decided it was time to overclock my cpu because I needed better framerates in Planetside 2. My issue is I have only reached 3.7 ghz stable overclock. I know the cpu can go farther because it keeps crashing because of the ram. My cpu is locked which means the ram speeds increase with the cpu clock. The ram is running at about 1400 mhz and is pushed about as far as it can, I did overvolt from 1.5 to 1.57 to help with stablility. My issue is when I try to take the ram speeds down a notch (at about 1100 mhz) I cannot boot. It always comes up as overclocking failed, then it reverts to the last settings. I overvolted the cpu to 1.38 and it doesn't get above 50 degrees C. I just don't know what to do about my ram. I am sure I left out an important detail so please ask my for more info if needed. By the way, this is my first time overclocking.
Amd Phenom II x6 1055t
Nvidia GTX 560
8gb Corsiar xms3 ram 1333 mhz
Seagate barracuda 7200.12 1tb
Asus m5a990fx pro R 2.0
Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO
First make sure your BIOS is up to date.
<1333 = there is no need to run at below standard ddr3 specs.
Re-do your overclock. >1.45vcore, ht link 200, multi x20, bus 200. =4ghz, leave your ram at default settings or manually set them to the rated clocks and voltage.
Just keep an eye on your temps @4+ghz things will start to get hot.
My cooler cannot keep my cpu cool at 1.45 volts, and I cannot change the mutiplyer from 14 because it is a locked cpu.
Sorry champ had it confused with a 1090.
Just up the ht and bus as to the maximum with the highest safest voltage you can achieve. 14x280bus with a ht of 2000'ish.
Remember though when heavily oc'ed these old chips suck a lot of power so if its struggling to get good clean power then both the board and the cpu will have issues.
Also disable 'cool and quiet tech' and any other power saving feature in the bios as these just hinder the oc'ing process.
Your temps shouldnt be too high - even in the range of 1.45 temps shouldnt be a problem with your cooler unless there is a mounting issue. Nearly all of these cpu's should get to around the 4ghz mark with ease, I had an 1100 that went like the clappers without breaking a sweat.
Worst case if you cant get things to work properly there is always the AMD Overdrive uitility. Although I dont personally like overclocking software this one does do what it says on the tin quite well.
That really doesn't help me, I am having issues withe the ram. I can take the ram down one notch, which at a base clock will make the ram speeds 1066 mhz, but when I try to take it down 2 notches, which at a base clock will make the ram speeds 800 mhz. When I get to 3.7 ghz the ram is at 1400 mhz with one notch down, and 2 notches It would be at I think 1150 mhz, but I cannot get it to boot.
