AMD Graphics Card question

Hi

So I just bought a Radeon HD 7990 for $300. I was originaly going to buy a R9 380. But then I saw this card and my thought when getting this card was... The Radeon HD 7990 was the same as two R9 280s and a R9 280 was the same as a R9 380 just slower. So what im asking is did I buy two R9 380s in crossfire just slower.

The 7990 is two 7970s on one PCB. or for modern name scheme sakes, the 7990 is two R9-280x cards on one PCB. it's still an impeccable GPU, even by today's standards even though it's two years old. the only issue that may arise is crossfire issues. like most crossfire systems tend to have. depending on the game you play it's a massive headache.

the R9-380 is originally the R9-285. it was meant to replace the R9-280 (or the 7950). as an energy efficient card.

Thank you for clearing it up for me:)

Just one more question! Do you think it would be worth it to get another on of these cards or would it cause to much of a problem?

4 way crossfire is just a big no. Games wont really use more than the 3rd GPU. Plus the second card is going to run hotter than the first. Which isnt good for a dual GPU card. If you already bought the 7990 i'd recommend you keep it like that and dont add another card. Plus the power draw will be insane if you added another 7990.

Ever feel like you have seen this before? :)

Once again thank you for the fast replys!

It doesn't hurt to answer the question.

To answer a question ? I have have seen amazing results from cf'ing from two 280's. In fact i prefer mid-high for overclocking to highend. I place a lot of value in the bandwidth. Faster vram helps but not always. Mostly it is about consistent through put.

When you said "ever feel like you've seen this before?" i assumed you meant the question of the thread. As for CrossfireX i never said it was bad, but 4-Way Crossfire is definitely not worth the power-draw and usage.

I agree... anything over two way cross fire and sli is not worth doing. Reminder to the downside of 280's is that the new directx 12 will most likely not help you much. A marketing plan that people will follow like sheep. :)
