I am trying to put together an AMD gaming build that will last me a while (playing current and future games on high - ultra settings). My last AMD build (Phenom II x4 955 BE/ 2 HD 4890's in crossfire) lasted me 5 years, and I am trying to do the same with this build.
Here is my build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Jmmm
One note, I currently have the Asus Sabertooth 99FX R2.0 as my MB as a place holder. I would like to get the Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0/GEN 3 for the PCIe 3.0.
Will my build be able to achieve this. I am trying to stay at around $2000.
Also, I do have one question, will the power supply that I have selected be enough to power my build (with a little to play around with to add LED lights/RAM cooler)? I do have an 850 in my current computer, could I use that?
Unfortunately, the AMD based Sabertooth 99FX R2.0/Gen 3 will only support one full x16 PCI-e 3.0 bus, and it draws so many PCI-e lanes together to make that one that you can only run the others at a max of PCI-e 2.0 x8 when you fully populate the lanes of the PCI-e 3.0 x16 slot. What I'm trying to say is this: Get a Radeon 7990 to make full use of this board. Or just stick with the one you've got. The two Radeon 7970's would be taxed to fully saturate the bandwidth that PCI-e gen 2 provides. Other than that, everything looks AWESOME!
So here is a question based on what you just said. If the the new Sabertooth will not support 2 PCI-e 3.0 x16, could I save some money and go with this MB: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-990fxagd80v2
Since you're looking for a high performance build, I would hold on to the old system just a tad longer, as the next generation (steamroller) AMD CPU's will come out in summer, and your system is only four years old and will do just fine until then. You could get the graphics card already if you can get hold of a limited edition Asus ARES or something (while they won't be available anymore in summer), as AMD is not going to release any new high end GPU's in 2013. A new motherboard is also safe to buy because steamroller will be AM3+ compatible, yet it will most probably be 10-20% faster than an FX-8350.
How do you know that Steamroller is coming out this summer? IMO if you want to upgrade, do it. There is aways better tech on the horizon, so don't play the waiting game.
