AMD FX 9590 massive uk price drop

A few months  ago AMD announced the latest additions to their FX-series processor lineup: the FX-9590 and FX-9370. Clocked at Turbo speeds of 5GHz and 4.7GHz respectively, these new CPUs made some waves in enthusiast circles due to the high frequencies and AMD’s decision to only offer them through system builders rather than normal retail channels.

But now are available for as little as £279.59 for a 9590 5Gzhz cpu interestingly the same price as a Intel CPU i7 4770K.

Do you think it's enuff to justify buying at this lower price or do you think it's still wishfull thinking from AMD?

If It's pricetag is 400 USD I could see it being worth it. Only if for the fact you have a verified product that will meet a 5GHz standard overclock when you turn off all that turbo-core garbage and set it manually with underclocking power saving features still active. Hell it takes 2-3 sometimes 4 CPUs before you can find an FX-8350 that will do 5GHz with 1.54v or slightly less. Most, including my own, FX-8350 will only reach 4.8GHz at 1.488v and have a brick wall that is impassible at 4.9GHz no matter what voltage is applied.

You still need a beefy motherboard and heatsink to get this to work. So basically if you have a mid range board you will need to buy a new one.

i think the sabertooth is one of the few they recommend

I think that's a load of marketing crap, a Sabertooth 990FX could run that Processor with an H100i. They are just trying to clear out their overstock of super high end 990FX motherboards that have been sitting in warehouse storage for months now to move product so they can make room for more FM2 motherboards.

Any 5GHz FX-8350 I've ever seen could be used on an 8+2 digital power phase with an exceptional few on 6+2 digital power phase. The FX-8350 uses 220w at 5GHz with 1.54v, this whole, "you need a super-duper high end motherboard" crap is nonsense. And shame on AMD for making a deal with motherboard manufacturers to pump out 240 dollar 990FX motherboards out of their warehouse stock.

It's also about 50 dollars cheaper than a Crosshair V Formula-Z. I don't classify the Sabertooth as the highest end because it's a step down from the most expensive thing. Same with the ASRock Extreme9 there is absolutely no reason you should need to pay 240 dollars for a motherboard. to run a FX-9590.

just seemed you were saying they were saying top top end boards only, and not a sabertooth

but they do say sabertooth is compatable, hell i wouldn't be afraid to drop one in my m5a99fx pro

From some benchmarks I saw, the FX 9590 does in fact beat the 4770k in a lot of tests, only falling short to the 1k$ extreme processors. Along side the 8 core, 5 ghz bragging rights, I think that is the reason why AMD released it for 800$. Now, because in a bunch of tests the 4770k beat the AMD one, most people, including me, kinda laugh at the attempt to sell for 800$.

With regards to the mobos, I have the MSI 990fx gd80 board and they already limited the voltage for the 8350 in the bios due to the thermal output. If you attempt to overclock via software, they'll throttle you to 1.4 ghz....

Link to benchmarks: http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/62166-amd-fx-9590-review-piledriver-5ghz-7.html Looking mainly at the three productivity pages because gaming... Eh, it didn't do so well.

A sabertooth is what i was implying. Its no mid range board.

the back clocking to 1.4 ghz on the FX8350 has nothing to do with voltage throttle, it has everything to do with cool n quiet. what is probably enabled, and the cpu core voltage control in offset mode..

Next to that the Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 is a high end mobo. because it uses the same powerphase chokes vrm´s design as the Crosshair does, the only thing that makes the Crosshair more expensive, is because its a rog, that means better sound chip, and problably some extra feutures. but pure to technical power part, they identical, as far as i know. Also the Asrock Extreme 9 is a highend board.  those new cpu´s you can trow them on those boards, i would personaly recommend a Rog, Sabertooth , or Extreme 9 board for those new cpu´s

If AMD discontinues the AM3+ boards I may pick this up with a nice Sabertooth board to replace my 6300 and 970 extreme 4.

Umm... http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html makes the part seem reasonably priced.

But that site just doesn't seem legit, look at their gpu test, like nvidia much?

And MisteryAngel using the software MSI provides is the only way to overclock on a msi gd80 (so I thought). The software was doing the throttling, not cool n quiet or any other power saving thing in the bios. Trust me, I've spent so much time with the board... edit: then again, maybe the software enabled the cool 'n quiet without me knowing...

Now with regard to the msi gd80 your have to use a windows based bios (different than the other software) to change the voltage above the locked 1.44 v. Then you have to deal with .10 vdroop... .10! This is because they have no option to use high llc. It's all stable now though.
