So, I've been doing some research on FX-8350 (AKA: The piledriver) and so far I didn't find anything other then comments like: The Piledriver sucks! It overheats! It underclocks itself! Get yourself an Intel CPU ASAP. Is all of that true? What are your opinions on the piledriver? Is it a good CPU at all?
I think that for sheer performance you're going to have to go for the intel variants but if you're a little tight for cash and will use this for gaming and you're not going to take advantage of some intel technologies that help with rendering the FX line is VERY VERY competitive
as for rendering it won't help you if your application doesn't take advantage of 8 cores. If it does the 8350 will excel
I've never heard pf the 8350 underclocking or overheating. My $20 air cooler can keep it sub 50c at 4.4Ghz with no throttling. It is such a beast of a chip I would definitely recommend it. Very powerful, better than any i5 and is only a hair behind some i7's. Even in rendering (Adobe premiere and Cinema 4d) this is just as fast (<1% slower) than my friends 4770k.
FX8350 is a great value for money cpu,"underclocking story´s", are bullshit. People who make that statement, have a lack of knowledge. Underclocking, is just a power saving fueture, called cool n quiet, this is an feuture that clocks the FX8350 back wenn its idleing. to save power, this feuture can be disabled in the bios! something i personaly recommend by the way ☺
The FX 8350 will underclock its self IF you leave 'amd cool and quiet' enabled in the bios its a power saving option the chip will run at 1.2ghz when not in use or its idle to save power if you dont whant that you just disable it.
As for running hot FX chips dont run past 65c but the stock coolers are junk and you will be whanting a aftermarket cooler to stop the irritating noise it makes.
With a proper cooler, it overclocks well and won't throttle. I could see heat/throttle being an issue if you were to place your rig on a floor vent with the thermostat set at 80*F, use the stock cooler, allow the case and fans to clog with dust; other than that, I haven't heard of such issues from friends/coworkers who run them in their gaming rigs and home servers. It sounds like you're reading fanboy "reviews". The price to performance ratio with the 8350 is ridiculous in comparison with anything from the current gen of Intel.
I have an 8350, and all those rumors are false. 5GHz overclock here with Max temps of 60c. Price for performance wise, it destroys just about all the intel chips hands down.
I hope AMD improves things like cool n quiet for future chips so it doesn't throttle when you're doing something and more accurately gauges when a low power state is appropriate, so there's no need to turn it off and you can still get the power saving advantages.
I love my FX-8350. In games it is totally competitive and is sometimes even better than Intel CPUs. It does very well with rendering as well. Completely outclasses my 3570k and is about the same a 3770 a friend has. Sometimes it is slower other times it is faster.
It overclocks well and doesn't get that hot as long as you have a good cooler.
4.8Ghz and I am getting low to mid 50s at load with a Kraken X60.
I use my FX-8320 for streaming/rendering and I love it. I was also on a budget and it fit in really well. I only paid like $130 for it so it beats anything that intel has for $130. Honestly it's really good. I have a Kraken x60 on it and have it OC'd to 4.7.
Everybody here says the 8350 does not underclock itself.
My 2600k does underclock itself under a full load and around 65C. It is overclocked to 4.5ghz, but it will often drop down to 3.4 (stock speed) for ~10 seconds at a time. Again, under a full load and around 65C. That's with every throttling option I could find in my BIOS turned off.
