I've been looking at the AMD FX 8 core series cpu (ie. 8350), but I found out that not all of the AM3+ motherboards work with such a cpu. So which do and which don't?
For example could the ASUS M5A78L work?
Yes this board will work, generally if you go to the motherboard manufacturers website you will be able to find cpu compatibility lists.
I recently bought one of AMD's new 8 core processors , the AMD FX 8320 (fantasic CPU btw) , and I can guarantee to you that the Asus M5A97 works like a charm with this CPU.

The link you gave me shows that the mbo that you bought is M5A97 R2.0, If Ii remember correctly the R2.0 has something to do with the 8 core issue.
I already was to the manufacturer webpage, but I wasn't able to find any definitive answers, since it only said that the current bios version supported, but I don't know which bios version does the mbo have from the local shop.
I would try avoiding flashing bios, since if something goes wrong, I would have to remove the bios ic, and use a eeprom proggramer to fix it again...
As for the 8350, I guess that is good, currently I have the Phenom 9500 (with the tlb bug) and it still performs well.
So is the R2.0 mark important for the 8 core cpu-s or not?
I think that the R2.0 marks 8 core support.
Can anyone confirm this?
I can't believe that nobody can answer that question!
As long as it is an AM3+ motherboard it will support the FX series chips. Although some may need a BIOS update to optimise its operation.
EDIT: Also you are better off to use the higher end chipsets (Eg 990x or 990FX)

Thanks for the reply.
Now I have another problem.
Nobody seems to sell the 8350 in Croatia!
When contacting the PC component dealers they say that they can't even get it!
Look for a European dealer and see if they ship worldwide, you may get landed with import tax though (depending on the regualtions for importing goods in Croatia)
I do believe overclockers.co.uk ship to Europe via DPD, but I do not know how long delivery would take. (A few days they say)

Custom officers would kill me for such an item. Once I ordered to vacuum tubes which costed about 100$, and I had to pay 50$ for customs/inport taxes/whatever!
I got all of the components today.
I bought the Asrock 990FX Extreme3.
Lets hope it works!
Small problem, the Asrock 990FX Extreme3 has the ram slots too close to the CPU so when I installed the Hyper212 cooler I couldn't fit the rams in anymore! I had to take the cooler off, and do a bit of hardware work in order do move some of the aluminium sheets so that the ram could fit in.
Ram seems to be limited to 1300. All of the components are rated 1866MHz, but when i set ram to 1866MHz it won't work. Do I need to flash the bios?
