AMD Dual Processor WS

Hi, I need some help with spec's for building an AMD dual processor system.

Usage: I use my current systems 8hrs+ a day. Mostly animation (After Effects, Maya, Premier Pro). I run a dual core and a quad core workstations and they are a little sluggish to say the least!!! especially when working on big After effects scenes. I need something that can handle everything I throw at it and more, is stable running Windows 8.1, and will last at least 3-4 years.

Here is what I picked out so far for an AMD Dual Processor build. It totals just over 2k and I dont want to go over 2.5k if possible. I dont need any extra's, just the system in it's case. I will stick in x2 SSD's for system drive and one for cache and a SATA HD for working files.

Just need help on the specs and compatibility of it all. Also any recommends for graphics cards for after effects (keeping within the said budget if possible)

Any help appreciated.

I dont know how much you trust EBAY, but you can get 12 and 16 core opterons for like 150-200 and six cores for 40ish USD.

Here is the build I put together that comes to $2,493.93 on Newegg and is DESIGNED for WORKSTATIONS.

  • MotherBoard: ASUS KGPE-D16 Dual G34 SR5690
  • RAM: Kingston 32GB 4x8GB ECC Registered DDR3 1600
  • CPU: 2 x AMD Opteron 6344 Abu Dhabi 2.6GHz 12-core
  • Power: Thermaltake Toughpower Grand PS-TPG-1200FPCGUS-1 80+ gold 7 year warranty
  • Case: Phanteks Enthoo Luxe Series PH-ES614L_BK
  • GPU: AMD FirePro W600 100-505835 2GB Workstation video card
  • Disks: you already have.

Anyone using a workstation for workstation related jobs needs to use a WORKSTATION GPU aka FirePro or Quadro.

They work differently than desktop GPUs.

The Power Supply needed to support 2 8-pin CPU plugs plus the standard 24 pin. Hence the Thermaltake. The Dual socket nature requires 2 8-pin CPU plugs.

Here is two workstations I put together recently, one AMD, one Intel, both dual-CPU.

Prices are actually not that different in the end. Check them out.

Prices are in Euro though.

Intel:

At the end of the day, I'd most likely go with the intel version.

When I put them together I had video editing in mind. I wanted to see what would be the cheapest way to put together a capable Dual-CPU workstation.

Thanks for all the info. I;ll certainly check out all your links. Doesn't have to be AMD! I just see the $$$ in comparison to Xeon/Intel equivalent builds. What is important is the budget. Must be no more than 2.5k total not including HD's. Thanks so much everyone for posting replies.

Some extra info in case this changes everything!!! System doesn't have to be dual processor. Just trying to get biggest bang for buck around 2.5k. I just thought dual is what I need so that i'm not waiting for After effects to catch up with me each time I move something! I do alot of work with high res 2d puppet rigs and also elements 3d.

I will investigate all the suggested builds though thank you.

Nice build! Just added this to my build wishlist. Thanks for suggestion.

Just going to point out that, for Adobe programs, geforce GTX or AMD Radeon graphics cards perform tons better than workstation cards, i.e. Quadro and Firepro, at the same price.
