AMD Cuts R9 290 and 290X MSRPs

With the release of the cheaper Maxwell based GTX 970 and 980 AMD has been feeling the squeeze. Their top tier cards, the R9 290 and 290X were no longer the value they once were.

However, AMD has announced today that they will be cutting the prices on these cards in order to stay competitive.

The R9 290 will retail for $300 and the 290X for $400. These prices put the R9 290 in line wit the GTX 970's $330 MSRP and the 290X at a much lower price point than the 980 which retails for $550.

At time of writing a decent R9 290, with non reference cooling, can be had for $270.

Hopefully, these price slashes will hold AMD over until they release their next series of GPUs.

dang. that's pretty low. even lower on ebay

wow Sapphire 290 TriX OC for only $270 would be nice lol ☺

The only thing which is annoying, is that prices dont get recalculated world wide. If a card costs $270 in the states, then i will pay the same amount of that in euro´s. €270,-

€270,- = $342,-

$270,- = €214,-

This kinda stinks ☺

That's probably the only thing good about the US though.

Some of the Cards are still expensive though :(

The Only 290 Cards that have dropped in Price are the Reference Model (But Who Cares about that) The Sapphire Tri-X and the ASUS model. every other model is still around that $350 to $450 Range.

and with the 290X Card they range from $400 to $500 Once the Cards that hit the $450 range they start to make no sense cause the 780ti is the same price as that. and that annihilated the 290X.

I would of Loved to have grabbed a 290 Vapor-X Card but that card is $450 on most retailers.

I think they both need to drop at least another $50, the 290x another $100 if possible. Both get beaten by the 970 so there's some really stiff competition there.

Bullshit we do. It is around €400 for one last I checked, and the conversion gets messed up, the Nvidia Shield 250 USD 350-400 EURO.

Prices on some items are as bad for me. A lot of times its worth just buying from the US and having it couriered to you.

R9 290 for $299.99 for Asus Direct CU 2 $20 rebate and 3 free gold tier games > 970 !

i just kinda want a 290. think i can crossfire with 750 watts? 125 used by the cpu.

Could be close..might be possible though

thats what i would go for. $309 with rebate and 3 gold tier games, makes it like less than 200 bucks!

Cool, but i'd rather wait for an r9 380x or maybe an r9 390.

The 290X at 399 is stil not THAT aggressive vs the GTX 970....but the 290 at 299 is a great deal.

Just go on ebay and get a R9 290x for ~300 That is where i sold 6 of mine after bitcoin mining the hell out of them and the fan at 100 percent at 100 percent load is 70c so no worry of hot overheated cards.

Just picked up an HIS IceQ X2 R9-290 for $285 CDN (reg $509) yesterday. I'd say that's a pretty darn good deal. :D

wow nice.

let me know about the temps and noise levels.

Buy some noctua fans to match the shroud lol

Too bad its blue PCB :( EWWW

Thanks. Yeah, especially for Canadian prices, this is nuts for a 290 where most others are still well over $400+.

Will let you know. From what little information I've been able to find on this card, apparently they are one of the quietest and coolest running 290's you can get, along side the Sapphire tri-X and Vapor-X.

Just checked the store I bought this from and all their locations are now out of stock, understandably.  :P

To anyone in Canada, keep your eyes on http://www.memoryexpress.com/ for more deals. They told me this particular HIS 290 is not discontinued, so they should get more in before the sale ends on Oct 31st.

Lol, I know. It has a bit of an "out there" style, but not too bad. Aside from the colour, it is a pretty clean design and in some of the customer reviews they say it looks better in person. To be honest, it's starting to grow on me a bit...

It'll be out of site in my case anyways (Fractal Node 304) so it's no biggy. Plus I may install the Kraken G10 that I had on my now deceased 7950. ;)
