the 260 core 216 price dropped alot to be cheaper then the 4870 1gb and the 260 216 core has better performance for price right now soo o.o; yeah put that into your mind
glad your looking at AMD I found this really nice AM3 MoBo you might want to look at http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1740 and I'm not an ATI fanboy but they are pretty cheap (145 for a 4870 that's just cheap! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161236) anyways I can't wait for the 945s and other CPUs from AMD to come out.
Im still with Nvidia. i just dont like crossfire as much as sli
lol, i thought you were thinking this: AMD>Nvidia
Now: SLI>Crossfire
true 4870 ~ gtx 260 2x 4870 > gtx 280 (2 4870 are only 290$) but when you start to go higher with multi card solutions ATI crossfire falls behind in scaling (ie gtx 295 > 4870 x2 gtx 295 = 2x gtx 260s ???) but you have to admit crossfirex is pretty cool because you can mix and match your video cards a little bit.
I'm not an AMD fanboy but I mich prefer them, but I'm using intel as of now. And I'm a straight up Nvidia fanboy, I wouldn't even consider an ATI card unless Nvidia got back to the FX ways.
ive also owned both ati and nvidia cards and so far i like the way nvidia is better. i mean theyre both going to let you run your games and all, just like a ford and a chevy will both let you drive, its just personal preference i suppose.

what about a dodge. On the note of cars it can also have to do with looks because that might be a factor in Nvidia's success their card manufactures came up with really nice looking cards but 90% ATI cards Ewwwww.... (except for the iceq4+ best looking card ever)
well looks can matter i guess, my gtx 260 black edition looks pretty sweet. however i dont have a window on my case so it doesnt matter much, lol
yeah that can be a problem (I don't have window either but I'm going to get a case with one soon) but if you do have one with a window or the Antec skeleton and an ugly looking card you will hate yourself for it. (I also think that the gtx 260/280 look better than the 295 or at least to me)
Really all of this "My CPU/GPU, is faster than you'r CPU/GPU" is a bunch of fan boy crap. Both intel and AMD have good CPUs for gaming, and the only really gap in CPU performance is in high-end editing. Even if a CPU is faster in benchmarks does not mean the CPU is faster in practice, because the benchmarks "3dmark06 ect" dosent reflect how good the CPU works in Game X or Y. As for in-game FPS benchmarks it seems to always come out to just 5 FPS difference tops.
When it comes to CPU's I get w/e is cheaper at the speed I want, right now I'd go with the AMD 940 because the build would be cheaper. What a lot of people don't see its not just the CPU that adds to the cost of the build, the motherboard for the CPU also adds in as well. All of the Intel Core i7 Mobos start at about $180-250 on newegg "not counting open box" On the other hard you can get a AMD DDR3 Mobo with just as much on it for $120-200. Also the AMD Phenom 2s, have more going for them because they work in AM2+ sockets and DDR2 ram. So if you didn't want to spend money for DDR3 Ram, and get it later when it comes down some, you can do that.
As for GPUs I do the same as CPUs, I get whatever is cheaper at the speed I want, I also look at the drivers when it comes to GPUs. I'm using a EVGA 8800GTS and hate the drivers, I've had nothing but problems with them, and have had to do a RMA "or w/e its called" one time already, and at one point thought i was going to have to again. A friend of mine just got a 4670, and I love the drivers for that card. I Also got a old ATI X1650Pro not to long ago for a old PC that had on-board, was easy to set up and so far no problems. Also I got a Acer 6530 laptop and have liked the drivers for that so far as well.
Get what you want but keep in mind that $50-100 for that 0.5% faster PC could had gone to a new game or w/e
