Which one and why?

A10 is quad core while the A6 is dual. Also the A10 turbos to 4,1ghz natively. If money is tight then the A6 is the way to go.

You decide. However if you're just looking for a decent processor and don't need an APU I would recommend the Phenom II x4 965 Black. It's around 80-90 dollars right now and the thing is lightning fast and loves to be overclocked.

I can't imagine he'd be looking at an APU without a need for the IGP on them.

Then again he may simply not know they are APUs...

Yeah. But even without using the integrated graphics the A10 is still a champ. It's the perfect CPU for someone that wants something functional and decent while they save up for a better GFX card. If you're like me and don't play a lot of high end games (I play stuff like Torchlight 2) then you may find that the APU alone is enough to satisfy you. I've been blown away by this chip.
