I decided to change from an Nvidia 1050 ti to an AMD 5500xt. at the same time, I got a new monitor. the new monitor works just fine with the 5500xt, but the old HDMI monitor does not. it just remains black. I have tried installing the drivers from the website, but get an error saying that the drivers only support 18.04. what should I try?
You don’t need to download any drivers, the drivers are already part of the OS.
Software: Update the kernel to latest stable, make sure the rest of the OS is up to date.
Hardware: Try HDMI on the new monitor and switch HDMI cable.
What about BIOS? Can you see anything before the OS comes up?
At this point you might as well grab the 20.04 beta. I’ve been running Lubuntu 20.04 for 2 months with no issues. The Oibaf PPA is supported and also works without problems. That will get you up to date with all of the latest stuff. If you decide to fix 19.10, document what you did in case you have to repeat this in a couple months.
upgrading to 20.04 did fix the issue.
now i just have to go and fix some other things
I was hoping it would not break things but it did. my dash-to-panel and arc menu extensions no longer work and steam appears to not work anymore as well (broken .desktop).
Did you upgrade instead of fresh install? That may introduce errors you wouldn’t otherwise encounter. You can always try to run the live ISO and try out the things that broke to see if they are actually broken in the newer version or just from the upgrade.
was able to fix them by installing the latest version from the github of the dash to panel extension and arc menu was broken because dtp was broken
