AMD 3 displays without Active DP adtapter

My AMD R9 280X absolutely refuses to have three displays working at one time.

I have one monitor connected via DVI
Another connected by HDMI

I tried to connect a third monitor I had laying around via a passive display adapter. But it just does not work. 

I have spent a whole day searching, but I cannot find a solution.

I would really rather not have to buy an active adapter, prices in Australia are quite appalling.

Has anyone managed to find a solution? Or is it just impossible?

I found this on the interwebs about this card. It seems you need to use the display port to get your third monitor connected. Also from what I read the 1440p monitor will be scaled down to 1920x1200 if your gaming across the 3 monitors.

if you monitor doesnt have displayport you will need an ACTIVE display port adapter.
