AM5 IOMMU VFIO - Best Motherboard

Which pci-e slot do you use for Mellanox NIC?

Just tried it out, works fine with a Linux guest. Last time I tried did not work with a Windows guest, you needed the Mellanox OFED driver to get that to work. I suppose it hasn’t been fixed on the kernel driver but I haven’t tested it in a while.

I use the second slot, runs at PCIe 3.0 x8 with the Mellanox card installed.

Forgot to mention that the first slot runs at PCIe 4.0. lspci reports that it is running at x16 but I don’t know how that can happen since the first and second slot are automatically bifurcated when both populated.

USB-wise group #30 is the single USB-C port next to the ethernet port, group #31 is for the “lightning gaming” port nearest the edge and the single USB-B next to the ethernet and group #24 is for all the rest. Assigning group #33 to a VM reboots the host.

Well Msi and Gigabyte are mainly focusing on gaming and overclock enthusiast motherboards.
So that they don´t mention anything about ecc support isn´t that strange,
because they likely don´t really care.
So with those brands ecc support could either be a hit or miss.

I gotta say I am pleasantly surprised. I just clobbered together the hardware, hit the power button with my Ubuntu stick in the USB port, and got really nice IOMMU groupings right away. No BIOS settings touched.

Gotta put these USB ports, Thunderbolt ports, iGPU, and dGPU through some tests this week with Proxmox.

Yeah. ASUS is really the exception rather than the rule here. Also no surprise that ASRock backpedalled after having initially advertised ECC support.

Can you tell me what BIOS version are you using? Are you using ACS override?
Would really like to have some free USBs, thinking of getting a thunderbolt docking.

I can confirm same 26 IOMMU groups for the Asus B650M TUF Gaming non-Wifi mATX as @coffeeoops .

It shows 26 groups without any ACS override (tested on Fedora 38 and Unraid 6.12). But thats misleading.

For example USB passthrough - Only one of the four USB controllers can be passed through without hot crashing the host. 0c:00.3. Thats one USB 2.0 and one 3.0 on the back. Its also probably connected to one of the internal USB 3 ports.

The boot times are pretty long with EXPO even with latest BIOS (1601). So I am thinking of switching to B650M PG Riptide.

Also I have been trying ryzen iGPU headless passthrough, but no avail. Extracted VBIOS, disabled loading gpu drivers, VFIO bind, and although KVM win11 guest can see it in device manager, it outputs black screen.

There is a bug, probably AGESA, could be affecting you.
Here is my long thread of troubleshooting with a workaround.

Also I just reported it to AMD, hoping they will fix it.

The ASRock X670E Taichi, when I got it had nice IOMMU groupings out of the box without touching anything in BIOS. However, after BIOS updates, I had to go into the BIOS to enable it explicitly to get the nice IOMMU groupings.

The groupings are indeed nice as I’ve found out over the weekend. Only the stuff connected to the second chip set (the M2_3, M2_4, and 4 of the SATA ports) are kind of an annoyance, but it’s easy to plan around.

I obtained the information through trial and error as well as parsing the output of lspci -v.

Mind you, these group numbers will change depending on how many devices you have and where they are installed. Some of the SATA ports are not numbered because I had no SATA devices to use for testing. However, those SATA ports with the missing IOMMU information are definitely the ones using the ASMedia controllers and are each in their own isolated group.

I was able to pass through group 28 which allowed me to give the Windows guest 5 front panel USB ports, some of the ones on the rear panel, Bluetooth, and Realtek USB audio.

There is a caveat with the Thunderbolt ports which I managed to pass through: “legacy” USB devices show up in the guest, but Thunderbolt devices show up in the host. I had no luck passing through the Thunderbolt controllers.

There is also a caveat with group 27: because binding the group 28 USB controller to VFIO was done using its device ID and group 27 USB controller also shares the same device ID, you effectively cannot use 4 of the rear panel USB ports and 4 of the left over front panel ones for the host. If you want to use them, the 4 SATA ports in the same IOMMU group will be going along for the ride. I’m thinking I can unbind the USB controller from VFIO somewhere along the host’s boot process, but I haven’t figured that out yet.

But overall, I am very pleased with the ASRock X670E Taichi for my virtualization needs.

Do you have a VR setup? On my current motherboard, I cannot pass through USB ports without getting noticeable stutter in VR, so I had to get another PCIe card specifically for PCI passthrough of the card for full USB performance for my VR headset.

However, given that I also have 2 GPUs, with the taichi I would have to sacrifice the USB PCI card as there are only 2 PCI slots. Do both M.2 slot groups get the same performance in guests? Or would I want to put my fastest SSD for gaming in the first M.2 slot and pass through directly to the guest, and boot the host off of the chipset M.2 Slot ssd?

did you overclock your system?
During the burn in phase of my system I noticed that with some timings I don’t get any errors in Linpack or Y-Cruncher, but USB problems and sometimes IGPU problems.
If so, just go down a notch with Memory and IF clock and see what happens.

If not the case, something like this but with USB-C 3.2

No, didn’t overclock my current mobo (Gigabyte Aorus Master x570) and the stutter was still present in VR. It manifested as very brief but sudden loss of tracking with my Valve Index, and then tracking suddenly would return a split second later. Very annoying and disorienting. This occurs with USB ports passed through via device ID, no matter which IOMMU group I pulled the ports from. Only a pci passthrough usb 3.1 card solved this issue on this motherboard.

What is that m.2 card in your image?

Unfortunately, I didn’t find one with USB-C 3.1, if you have an M.2 slot available, that would be an option.

Have there been any standouts in the time since this question was raised? Are any B650/B650E boards suitable? On 9 April @LiKenun suggested the ASRock X670E Taichi looked best based on the IOMMU info seen so far. I’m wondering if there’s new info based on further experiments, bios upgrades, etc.

Here is the iommu grouping for the Asrock b650e taichi (non-lite). BIOS settings include IOMMU, AER, ACS, and SVM.

It’s interesting that the b650e taichi is a little different than the PG Riptide with the same chipset. I guess it has to do with how the PCIe busses and lanes are assigned?

My b650e was like that until I enable the bios settings. The last three are buried in the NBIO menu, I think. I think some people are say to turn on ARI?

Look at the proart B650. IOMMU groups are posted here and look great. Cheapest board with x8/x8/x4 slots. The only thing that’s „missing“ is pcie 5 slots, IMO.

I have the x670 proart and honestly wish I got that one, but it was not released yet at the time.

@mzu Were you able to fix your IOMMU groups with a BIOS setting on that X670E Taichi?
