For a new mobo+cpu combo, what would be the smart move? 1155 is at its end, but the 3770k is quite a bit better than the 8350 in general, but Steamroller will give move speed in the long run. Plus it seems that more programs are starting to take advantage of excess cores, meaning that AMD's performance could rise with time relative to Intel (at least as far as their current offerings go).
I7 3770k and FX 8350 are on different price points. What's your budget?
Haswell is still to come, and we need another year (probably more) until Steamroller gets mainstream.
When you build a PC; there is never something that will last fresh and powerful for more than 3 years, I've learned that going for a mid range system, and changing it after 3 years is the smartest move, even so, a 3770k, in 3 years will still be a powerful CPU for gaming.
Do you have any needs for going for a multicore processor? Would it even worth upgrading the CPU and keep the same mobo staying with a 990fx, when new chipsets will arrive with newer generations.
I am not talking cpu vs cpu here per se. What I want to know is which would have a better upgrade path? When I do get a new mobo+cpu, it will likely be a decent mobo and a decent cpu and I would like to be able to upgrade the cpu later on (to Steamroller or 3770k) when I have the money down the road. This is merely about prospects. And when I say decent mobo and decent cpu, I mean ~$150 mobo and ~$150 cpu. So again, which would be a better path for the long run?
Though I should have mentioned that this would be used only for gaming in my case, but I think it is worth the mention for other uses as well for other people in a similar situation.
