am3 vs am3+

ok i was wondering whats the diffrence between these

can a am3+ socket mobo

use both am3 and am3+ processors ?

The phenom II was AM3 and FX are AM3+. AM3+ motherboards are backwards compatable for AM3 but its not the other way around. Just be sure to check the socket compatability of both your motherboard and CPU to make sure they work together.

I think there are some differences in pinning.

The AM3+ socket is compatible with AM3 and AM3+ CPU's.

The AM3 socket is compatible with AM2+, AM3, and AM3+ CPU's, howevever, I believe some minor functionality maybe disabled with AM3+ CPUs, so it's recommended to use AM3+ socket with AM3+ CPU's.

The difference is; well, not really much of a difference. The AM3+ motherboards are already compatible with the FX series of AMD processors. The only other real difference is the fact that with AM3+ came new chipsets, such as 970, 990X, and 990FX. Other than that, there is pretty much no difference. The sockets are the same, the mounting system for CPU coolers is the same, everything is pretty much the same. Also, yes, an AM3+ motherboard does support not only AM3 CPUs but also AM3+ CPUs.

EDIT: Another difference is the socket color, with AM3 being White and AM3+ being Black. This doesn't really matter, it just tells you which socket you have.

AM3 or AM3+ is compatible with everything that says AM3.

BUT if you use one of the newer CPUs in an AM3 socket, you will be limited in some options (for example, most AM3 mobos won't let you OC your AM3+ CPU properly unless it's really high end).

Most Higher tier AM3 boards where "upgraded" to AM3+ by BIOS update.

AM3 boards have backwards compatibility with some AM2 chips, but AM3+ don't.
