I'm going to in the near future be building an 8350 build but as a man of very limited means that wont be for some time, as luck would have it my buddy has a Phenom II x4 955. This is my first build and My knowlege of technology is limited so I thought i would be best to ask here. Will the Phenom II x4 955 fit in a AM3+ mobo? I was specifically looking at the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 which supports AM3+ however the Phenom II is an AM3. If i could use his cpu as a intermediary until i have the funds for the 8350 that would be great so any input would be much appreciated.
Check out the ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0.
In regards to your questions yes it would be supported.

Yup, Socket AM3+ is backwords compatible with AM3 CPU's. In fact, there are quite a few "AM3+" motherboards that are just rebranded/updated AM3 motherboards, with even the same old chipset (ie 780G, 880, etc.)
jerm1027 is correct.
Keep in mind though that newer boards based on new chipsets have generally updated AEGSA ( AMD microcode ) as well as native UEFI's that are optimized for the current architecture. This is important more so for memory compatibility and some aspects of OC as both of those changes from CPU microcode from one generation of CPU to the next.
Hope this helps. Please enjoy the rest of your day.
