Am I crazy, or is some hardware drying up?

Is it just me, or are certain parts becoming short in supply?

It seems whenever I check Amazon or my local Microcenter’s website they seem to be out of stock of a lot of motherboards, even AM5 X870 motherboards. It seems the only motherboards they had in good supply are B650.

Also, it seems a lot of higher end M.2’s and memory kits are either hard to find or sold out.

Is this just me???

I guess Nvidia got a lot of the fab contracts?

It’s about to be the Chinese new year so a lot manufacturing in China has stopped is or is about to.

D.) all of the above

This is a product launch year so everyone is shifting production, winding down legacy, and generally struggling to keep up with demand as users hoard parts for their upcoming RTX 5000 and RX 9000 centric builds.

In 'merica … ?

Well maybe in part because of existing tariffs? And maybe because the newly elected President talking about increasing existing ones and imposing “new”, “stronger” ones? Not only on China, but Mexico and Canada? You know, the tariffs that those countries pay and “NOT” the 'merican people?

I’m hoping that we’re not about to enter the FO part of FAFO ( well we already have, but let’s see just how bad it actually gets ).

I also would like to speculate that since because the overall spending power of people have decreased, more so in the recent years, I think the manufacturers didn’t make a lot of runs because they think people wont buy much.

Ultimately, I think they are afraid of unsold stocks of consumer computer parts bleeding into their profits.

Yeah, remember during COVID when there were massive surpluses of certain product segments and prices crashed and manufacturers took a wash? They certainly do.

Thanks for sharing your political opinion. I’m sorry the person you voted for lost.

From what I have heard from people who are in the know about maritime logistics, the possible incoming tariffs have caused businesses to stockpile and rush more stock to the US before it costs them more.

You know I have heard that’s why car prices went so high during the pandemic - Car companies practiced such a tight lean manufacturing model that when the supply chains broke down their manufacturing immediately stopped because they had no stockpile of components, because they only kept on hand what they needed for that specific run of manufacturing. And since they had no stockpile of supply either, supply dried up quickly and prices went up too.

The SN850Xes I ordered under WD/Sandisk’s Black Friday discount were maybe shipping this month but are now saying backordered until March.

Few other things

  • At least in my experience of the past few years, availability usually declines over the holiday shopping season and finishes recovering in March.
  • Nvidia seems to have taken to intentionally clearing the channel at higher pricing by drawing down previous gen stocks during the holiday season.
  • AMD boosting 9800X3D production due to low Alder Lake could indicate AM5 motherboard manufacturers are needing to boost production as well.

Huh … Just reread my post and I don’t see where I posted who I voted for or offered a “political opinion”.

I do see where I posted facts about tariffs and the reality of the fact that the American people pay them, and the possibility of higher prices and less supplies in the future.

The person who won, won. I can live with that. It’s the results of what the winner does is what I worry about. But those results are in the future, something I have no control over. But when it gets here I will know who is responsible, and so will history. I won’t be placing blame. History will do that for me.

That makes a lot of sense, thanks for sharing!

I really hope supply gets back to normal soon.

Hey dude, I owe you an apology.

I assumed your post was wrong because of the political tilt I perceived in your tone, but tone aside, I think you were right.

After doing further research it seems a lot of companies front loaded a lot of equipment in expectation of the coming tariffs, and since there was only so much room, they specifically front loaded the higher-end, more expensive equipment, servers and other non-consumer PC parts. So like you said, tariffs have played a big role in the drought of equipment.

I’m sorry for writing off your opinion and being rude and quick to judge in my reply.

Thanks for that. And if I came across a bit dickish, sorry.
